Mishaps  April 12, 1973
I witnessed this crash (SEE: In Memorial for (VP-47) lost friends April 12, 1973) from the highway that went through the golf course. I was picking up some golf balls hit next to the highway when I saw the Convair change run ways from 36 r to 36 L at about 3 miles from the golf course. As a private pilot I "got" the significance of what I was seeing and got into my car and drove quickly west bound so I would not be under the flight path of these converging aircraft. I watched the Convair essentially land on the vertical tail of the P-3, pushing it down thus causing the nose to point almost straight up. The P-3 did a loop and crashed nose first on the golf course. The Convair's pilot gave his bird full power but his nose was too high and his aircraft appeared to slowly flew backwards, tail first back onto the golf course. While the Convair appeared to have little outward damage besides a collaped landing gear, the port wing tip was on fire and the fire moved quickly to the body of the aircraft. A few very brave golfers attemped to break the front window of the aircraft but the glass was to thick. The golfers were forced to get away from the aircraft due to the of the fire. An interesting footnote: The Convair made an earlier landing at NAS Moffett Field, California while I was putting and I remember looking up at the co pilot who was looking at me getting ready to putt and he extended his hands in acknowledgement of my short putt and smiled at me and visa versa. Little did either of us know at the time that within 3 hours he would meet his maker. So tragic and so unnecessary. You could see 80 miles this sunny day. One would think that between all of the crew members and the controller that someone would have noticed the conflicting runway assignment.

Memorial  CAREL, ENSIGN Walter Leo
My Father, Walter L. Carel, served with VP-33 until his PBY was involved in a Mishap in the south pacific on September 8th, 1944 (Dad was seriously injured). It is with a great degree of sadness that I inform you of his passing on December 24th, 2009. He was part of that greatest generation that is regrettably losing its members. At his memorial service I bid farewell with the following: And the old men still answer the call, But as year follows year, more old men disappear. Someday no one will march there at all.

Memorial  Shipmate Pix MILLER, AMM2 Leo Patrick "Pat"
My Father, Leo Patrick Miller, served during WWII (August 6, 1941 - November 1, 1945) in the Pacific. Dad passed away October 8, 2007. According to Dad's papers he enlisted at Navy Recruiting Station (NRS) Raleigh, NC, attended AMMS School at Naval Training Station (NTS) and Advanced Base CUB Unit (ABCU) NAS Norfolk, Virginia, served aboard Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point, SC, Lion ONE, Club TWO, Commander Allied Air Forces Central Europe (COMAIRCEN) Solomon Islands, CASU-9 and VR-3. Daddy didn't really talk much about his experience in the Pacific. He told us about a close call that happened while he was on a ship traveling with a fleet. A ship in front of his, and the one directly behind, each suffered hits while Daddy's ship (in the middle of the two) narrowly escaped being hit. I wish I had asked my Father more questions about it. If anyone remember's my Dad - I would love to hear from you.

I served in WWII in ETO with VPB-112 as a tail gunner on a Navy B-24, flying antisub patrol and convoy duty for American ships. It would be great to hear from someone in the 112th! I am from Scotland Neck, N.C. but am currently living in Fredericksburg, Va. I found this website because I, too, am trying to recall the lyrics to Sky Anchors Aweigh! (My daughter thinks there are probably no specific lyrics; they were improvised to suit the occasion!).

Memorial  HEDDEN, Raymon R.
My Dad, Raymon R., 1911-1974, was a Navy officer at NAS Kodiak, Alaska in 1942-1943 in the Civil Engineering Corps, helping supervise contractors building the air station. We have some artifacts, photos and newsletters of that time, but thereafter his only comment on the time was that he didn't care to ever see Alaska again. He joked that after the monthly supply ship would appear from Seattle, its food would be eaten in the order it had been loaded and unloaded: no meat other than ham, then nothing but beef, then pork, etc. Famly lore has it that on 30-day leave home after the NAS Kodiak, Alaska year he revealed his new orders to my Mom and asked, "Where is Fort Lauderdale, FL?" So, out of its merciful bounty the Navy had taken pity and our family then lolled in the sunshine for the next two years. Anyone's information relevant to my Dad or his NAS Kodiak, Alaska experience would be welcome.

Mishaps  October 26th, 1978
Information from this mishap (In Memorial for lost VP-9 friends Alfa Foxtrot 586) was used for the P-3 chapter in the NATOPS Survival Manual 00-80T-101. The manual was pubished circa 1985. The P-3 NATOPS Model Manager contributed to the document. I was 00-80T-101 production editor from 1981 to 1985. Previously I served as a Training Analyst at the Naval Safety Center from 1971 to 1976. Too, the P-3 Community attempted to have the Universal Underwater Egress Trainer (Device 9D5) given a P-3 configurtion. Lockheed produced some drawings fitting the device configuration and permit as realistic as possible drills. The initial plan was to practice both surface and sinking abandonment.

Shipmate  LANGLEY, Wes
I served with VP-42 from 1964 to 1966. I reported aboard at NAS Iwakuni, Japan just after the 1964 incident in the South China Sea (In Memorial for lost VP-42 friends September 8th, 1964). I remember many plane parts laying out in the hangar on my introductory run through. I think Dale Armour, who went down in the 1967 loss in the Alaska area was a survivor of the 1964 incident. I had only been out of the Navy a few months when I read about the 1967 incident and noticed Dale's name and felt that he had told me he was one of the survivors of the 1964 incident. Dale used to keep a large 4 engine airplane model he had constructed from scratch on the top of his locker that he had worked on for a few years. He had tremendous talent and also a very special spirit that set him apart from the average person. I've wondered since that time just what it was spiritually that he had found. Perhaps if one of his family reads this you would be so kind as to let me know. Thanks for all he and the others did for our freedom. It's a precious freedom. I had family in the Jamestown Colony and the Massachusetts Bay Colony so know some of them paid a dear price for our freedom also. Of course, we're all related to the fellow who build the Arc so we are all in this equally it appears to me. Keep smilin and have a wonderful day.

Mishaps  September 1962
I served with VP-47 from 1962 to 1963. Our PBM when down while operating with the USS Seadragon (SSN-584) on a chilly evening in September 1962. We over sped the prop on the starboard engine and couldn't feather - we eventually lost the aircraft - we sustained no injuries. The USS Seadragon (SSN-584) had just surfaced and the Skipper made the conning tower seconds before we hit the water. They had us out of the water, in dry clothes, sitting in the galley with coffee in hand in less than an hour. Love those Sub Sailors.
