Shipmate  HUMMEL, AE2 Thurman "Bud"
I served with VP-1 from April 1968 to August 1969. I was an AE-2. We deployed from NAS Whidbey Island, Washington to NS Sangley Point, Philippines about November of 1968. We came back around the end of June 1969. I was mustering out in August 1969. Everyone was in California going to P-3 school. I stayed back at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington because I did not have enough time left to learn anything. I was on base and helped receive the first P-3 to our squadron. I only had to report to duty at 0730 as usual, but after muster, I could do anything I wanted to. I studied the information on the P-3. I really wanted to be a worker on the P-3. I finally was allowed to follow the guys around the plane and help them. I learned to do some of the pre-flight. I have some pictures of the first P-3 and the P2s behind her. I remember the trip back from NS Sangley Point, Philippines. The condensed version of a mishap was when one of our planes went down in the ocean. All hands were rescued the next morning, but the seas were rough and most had bad sea-sickness. They were rescued by a cruise ship, and the story goes that only one girl about 10 yrs old onboard, and the rest were senior citizens. All the men had been "adopted" by people on board, and they all came back with nice suits and new clothes. I remember Steve Bates was the on-board electrician when the plane went down.

Memorial  CARTIER, Joel
We have recently learned of the passing of our VP-19 Shipmate, Joel Cartier. Joel served with VP-19 between 1968 and 1972. He passed away in April of 2007 from cancer. After his service with VP-19, Joel finished college and became an elementary school teacher in Oshkosh, Wisconsin where he married his longtime love, Lynn and had 4 children. He was survived by his wife, daughters and grandchildren. Joel was a great guy who always had a smile in his heart and a laugh to share. His Shipmates and former crewmembers are saddened to learn of his passing. Albeit late, we are proud to have known Joel and mourn his passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I served with VP-42 from 1965 to 1968 (Crew-9 and Crew-10). I remember so many of you guys but the only person I've been able to contact is Maurice Goff. Best years of my life. I was in the US Navy from 1972 to 1978 and stationed in NAS Brunswick, Maine from 1974 to 1978. I was assigned to VP-23 as an AW3 Sensor 3 operator on Crew Four. I deployed to NAS Sigonella, Sicily, NS Rota, Spain and NAF Lajes, Azores, Portugal. I had several mini-dets including one to NAS Bermuda and another to NS Roosevelt Roads, PR for Springboard training. I was grounded in 1976 for allergy related sinus complications. I was then assigned to COMPATWINGSLANT in Topsham, Maine as a compliment to the R&D team under the tutelage of Senior Chief Rich. We worked together as practical advice imputs to the 3 PhD's assigned to developing ASW programs for the patrol plane squadrons. I was discharged from the Navy in 1978. I would welcome communication with others that flew with that squadron during that time era.

Mishaps  May 1st, 1944
On 1 May 1944 my fathers (Russell A. Antell) Crew #8 VB-106 was shot down after sinking a freighter off Biak. LT Seaman (P) and ENS Saviko(CP) were killed during the open sea landing. ARM1 R.L. Egger (Radioman), AMM2 B.C. Mankus (Top Gunner) and AMM2 J.E. Brown,Jr. (Gunner) were wounded and drowned prior to rescue the following morning. AOM2 I.L. Nilson (Gunner) later died in hospital. AMM1 R.A. Antell (2nd Mechanic/Gunner), AMM1 H.A.Gallagher (Plane Captain), AOM2 Jesse W. Samuels(Gunner), ARM2 Clarence S.Taylor (Radioman) and ENS Clarence Redmon Jr. (Nav/bombardier) were injured but rescued. I had the opportunity to meet the survivors of my fathers crew during one of their Reunions, unfortunately my father is the only one still living today. He resides with my mother in Fort Pierce, Fl and just celebrated his 85th birthday. I may be mistaken but he may be the only living member of the original VB-106 Bombing Squadron that was commanded by John T. (Chick) Hayward from 1 June 1943 to 1 June 1944. I thought it was interesting that his crew mishap of the gear collapse at NAB Henderson/Carney Field, Guadalcanal would be posted but not the other crash.

Shipmate  AWC HAZEL, Joe W. Retired
I served with VP-22 from 1967 to 1970. Flew mostly with crew 12. I was ordered to Long Beach for inpatient alcoholism treatment after spending awhile in the NAS Pearl Harbor, Hawaii Brig. I went through another treatment in San Jose State Prison in 1970 and the Navy kept me on active duty. I entered another inpatient treatment at Portsmouth Naval Hospital in April 1970. I have been in recovery ever since (30 years on April 1st). I retired in 1981 with a Navy Commendation Medal for my work with alcohol and other drug prevention. I went on to college after retirement and continued working in the substance abuse field. I now have my own practice in Raleigh, NC. I want to thank Captain Kneisel (Commanding Officer VP-22) for seeing my plight and starting the wheel turning for a new life. I thank all VP-22 Shipmates for putting up with me and some for being very good friends. One such friend was Dave Marks, who shared the same problem I did. However, I learned he was deceased around 1980-1981.

I served with VP-11 from December 1963 to November 1966. I was trapped in the Navigator seat most of that time because of the "Crew Rediness" concept. I left active duty and flew for TWA for 33 years. I stayed in the Reserves for eleven years though so I finally got lots of stick time in the P2 as the squadron's NATOPS Officer.

Memorial  HAAS, AO Edward J.
My Father, Edward J. Haas, passed away April 2004. Dad was an AO and was air crew in P2V aircraft based in Japan sometime between 1956-1959. I think that he was based out of NAS Atsugi, Japan or Youkouska. He was part of VAH-8 onboard the Midway for the 1959 to 1960 cruise. I don't know what squadron he was in but he had a jacket patch with a picture of a donkey on it and it read Fergie's Flying Jackasses. Dad never talked a lot about it and I was just wondering what his job might have been and what kind of guy he was then. I was a destroyer sailer and Dad always made sure that I knew that he was aircrew and NOT ships crew. If anybody knew him I would be grateful for anything that you could tell me.

Mishaps  April 12th, 1973
It was my last day in the navy. I was in VP-9, AE2. I had just come back early from the deployment to NAS Iwakuni, Japan to end my enlistment. I walked out of the credit union and the planes crashed into the golf course across the freeway (SEE: In Memorial for lost friends April 12, 1973). I could see a golfer with his golf club hitting the thick windows of the P-3 until the heat forced him back. I think that he could see someone inside trying to get out and in the extreme panic and disorientation not pulling the handle on the overhead escape hatch in the cockpit. I have never forgotten this tragic event.

The new barracks, 2 men to a room , what a treat. Raised in Iowa, I loved the beaches. I now live in Cleveland, TN and visit Florida often.

When VR-8 went to Berlin, if I remember, they were the Detachment and the few (including me) that stayed at Hickam was still just VR-8 - not detachment. However, everything I read says the Berlin Group was the command and those at Hickam was the Detchment. I remember playing on the basketball team that won the Pacific Divison Tournament - either late 1948 or late 1949. I left VR-8 in May 1950.

I served with VP-45 from the Spring of 1980 through the Fall of 1983. This included a NAS Bermuda deployment and two NAS Sigonella, Sicily deployments. I was a sensor station three operator on CAC's 1 and 2. Would love to here from anyone who served in the squadron during my tenure, especially any one from the AW division. I'm planning on attending the Patron Four Five (VP-45/VP-205/VP-MS-5) Association Reunion in Jacksonville in September and would be interested in hearing from any AW's who may want to attend or have location information on other members of our shop. I have had limited communication with ex-AW's McGinley, Steil, Mead, Polley and Hampson. Those were great days and we did important work..no regrets.

I served with VP-49 from 1961 to 1964 in P-5's and then P-3's. I was on Crew 3 most of the time. I left the squadron as an AT2 when I was selected for NESEP and attended North Carolina State University. I made AT1 while in school. I couldn't make Chief so I went up for Ensign. After commissioning I went through flight training (multi-engine) then plowed back as a Flight Instructor at VT-1 from 1969 to 1971. From there I went through VP-30 RAG then on to VP-23 from 1972 to 1975. I was the PPC of Crew 9. I then served a tour at COMOPTEVFOR and spent my last tour on the USS Saratoga as the EW Officer from 1977 until I retired in 1980 at the age of 37 as an LCDR.

I also did my other time in S-3's VS-21 from 1987 to 1992 and VS-22 from 1998 to 2002. I sure did hate seeing that plane lose AW's and its most vital ASW mission to become nothing but a long range tanker but it's the best plane the Navy ever purchased. It will be a sad day when the last one goes to the Boneyard here in the near future.

Notice  VO-67 Awarded Presidential Unit Citiation
It is my pleasure to make an historic announcement. Observation Squadron Sixty-Seven ( VO-67 ) has received the Navy Presidential Unit Citation for its actions during the Vietnam War. This announcement, from the Secretary of the Navy , comes almost forty years after this unique ultra secret squadron performed with courage and valor along the Ho Chi Minh Trail and in support of the Marine combat base at Khe Sanh , South Vietnam in 1968.

Some interesting history:
    1.  No PUC's have ever been awarded to either a P2 Neptune or a P-3 Orion squadron in Naval history. Thirteen patrol squadrons received the PUC during WW-2. These units operated PBY-4 and PBY-5 aircraft.

    2.  The Navy has never up-graded an award after it was awarded, ie NUC to PUC. VO-67 is the first.
The VO-67 Association WebSite will be up-graded to reflect this change shortly after Christmas. Citation will be posted at that time.

Great work on behalf of the Ghost Squadron Kerry, Alex and all !!

Bob Reynolds VO-67 Association VP

I received this letter on December 22, 2007.

TO ALL VO-67 PERSONNEL AND FRIENDS OF VO-67:

Since November 22, 2002 Kerry and Maxine Bignall, along with CDR A.G.Alexander, have worked tirelessly in pursuit of the Presidential Unit Citation for VO-67. After five years and with the help of many others Kerry Bignall was notified by the Naval Awards Board in Washington, DC that VO-67 is hereby awarded the Presidential Unit Citation on December 20, 2007. VO-67 has set a Naval precedent by having their Navy Unit Commendation upgraded to the Presidential Unit Citation. This award is bestowed on all personnel who served with VO-67, in the air and on the ground. The Presidential Unit Citation is the unit equivalent to the personal award of the Navy Cross.

This would not have been made possible without the help of the following:
    U.S. Congressman Bill Sali (R-ID)
    Josh Callihan, USMC Congressional Aide
    Vicky Fulton, Congressional Secretary
LtCol James B. Wilkinson USMC (Ret)
LtCol Kenneth W. Pipes USMC (Ret)
LtCDR Ray W. Stubbe USN (Ret)
VO-67 Personnel who wrote letters and their Congressmen who responded
Navy Awards Board - CDR Leslie Priest USN (Ret)
    Larry McCreary
    Bill Rutledge USN (Ret) HAL-3
In honor of all VO-67 personnel I am very happy to have been able to serve VO-67 in this pursuit. Signed - Kerry R. Bignall
