I worked for ADR Robert D. Huggett and my Division Chief was Wade Lovern. I worked in the Tool Room until Chief Lovern made me Night Check Supervisor. I thought it was great that my Chief thought enough of me to handling the Supply Department. Chief Lovern and I got transfered the same month to the USS America where I worked on the flight deck on Cat 1 until I made AK3. I was transfered to supply to work with him again where he made me Night Check supervisor again. I ordered all the aviation supplies for all the squadrons and made a world cruise that took us to the Vietnam. I became a Shellback on that cruise and since we crossed the International Date Line on Thanksgiving Day we celebrated it twice. We stopped once to go swimming out in the middle of the Pacific and I drove off of the elevator. It didn't seem very high until I was in the air on my way down. What a dive. Spent lots of pesos in "PO Town", Shillings in Sidney, more peosos in Rio and a lot of Hong Kong Dollars. It was a great cruise. I had everyone in my division thinking that I was smuggling a girl back to the USA from Sidney. I did spend a few days with a girl name Janet Smedes who wanted to be a stowaway which several buddies knew about but I never told them she wasn't on the ship. Every night I would take a tray out of the mess decks as if I was going to feed her and then disappear for several hours. I had everyone guessing and really believing that she was on the ship. While at VT-29 the duty section had the job of scrubbing down the flight line. We would have about 15 guys with scrub brushes pushing around a 55 gallons drum ofr MEK and then wash it down with a fire hose. I came up with an idea of nailing the scrub brush heads to a wooden pallet with the MEK on the pallet and then pull it with one of the tractors that we used to moved the planes around. That reduced the work down to just 2 guys. My chief thought that was a great idea and apparently someone else did also because when I was stationed in NAS Oceana with VF-74 they used the same idea there but instead of a wooden pallet they used a medal one and put a sprayer on the MEK drum. I bet someone took my idea and made a fortune off of it..." [28NOV2009]

Worked on Night Line most of the time fueling, cleaning, and spotting aircraft for day flights. All that training as an AT was for nothing. We also did a little drag racing with - well never mind that - and a lot of fishing off the sea wall. I guess we didn't contribute much at the time, and I truly regret that now. Great experiences with deployments to NS Sangley Point, Philippines and NAF Naha, Okinawa, Japan with Detachments to U-Tapao Royal Thailand Air Force Base, Thailand and NAF Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. I left the Navy to finish College and returned via AOCS in 1975. After all the "Fun & Games" at AOCS I served with VT-10 ("FO" school), VT-29 (Loved those Convairs!!), VP-31 and arrived at VP-1 in 1977 for a deployment to NAS Cubi Point, Philippines and a wonderful Detachment to NAS Agana, Guam. In 1980 headed East to VP-30 as NFO Instructor and Naval Weapons Test Squadron (WST) Czar. 1983 saw me disappear into the Strange World of NMPC Sea Duty Component Det Dallas where my mind was "altered" and fingerprints erased (only kidding-I think). When released from confinement in 1985 had my pay back tour in DC in OP-13. Escaped to NAS Moffett Field, California in 1987 for re-programming at VP-31 then assigned to VP-19 for my DH tour. I had a blast on our NAF Misawa, Japan deployment thanks to the Soviets and Spring Ex 1989. It was amazing to see that many subs in one Op Area and that many P-3s fighting for rights to be ONTOP. We needed an Air Traffic Controller to keep us out of each other's way! After that last great melee, I was shipped off to Armed Forces Staff College and then back to DC to baby sit the NATOPS and Air Tac-Man conferences and publications. Retired in late 1991 and began working for Summit Research Corporation (DOD Contractor) out of Gaithersburg, MD as a Program Manager and recently, Director of Corporate Development. After 8 great years there, moved around to various other contractors until joining Adaptive Methods, Inc in 2003 as a Program Manager for NAVSEA IWS 5 SSQ-89 programs and several others. Currently, serving as Corporate Facility Security Officer and Operations Manager overseeing our 5 office locations across the East Coast. Browsing through the other entries has been a trip into the past and makes me realize just how much I miss the Squadron environment, hard work and fun we all had. Would love to hear from more of my former Shipmates and try to track down some buddies that have vanished. I'm still trying to find that "Bucket of Prop Wash" AWC Gary Dunlap sent me searching for that first week I reported to VP-22! I've reconnected with a number of my VP-22 Shipmates from the 1968 to 1972 era and we gather annually at different locations. We moved from Northern Virginia, just West of DC to Melbourne, FL. Staff duty with FAW-11 (later CPW-11) as ASW Officer followed. I worked for two of the finest officers I've known: CAPT Charlie Prindle and CDR Lynn Grafel. After "Black Shoe" training at CIC/TAO school at FCTCL Dam Neck in 1977, reported for Sea Duty with COMCRUDESGRU-8 at NAS Norfolk, Virginia. As Battle Group Air ASW Officer and TAO under RADMs Thor Hanson and Bob Walters, deployed on USS Biddle, USS Eisenhower and USS Independence. Graduated from Naval War College in 1980 and received orders to PACFLT at CPW-2 Hawaii from 80-81. Met, later to be VADM, Mike Haskins and worked for him in the Training Department until taking over Wing Admin. Dept Head tour followed with VP-6 (Ops Officer) 83-84. Next was another staff tour at CPW-1/CTF-72 in Japan as Current Ops under CDR John Brockley. I later took over the job of Task Force Operations Officer from 85-86. Finally got to come back the mainland for a brief tour in NAS Pensacola, Florida as ASO for TRAWING-SIX. How nice it was to have weekends off for a change. Then the BEST tour any NFO can have: CO/XO of VT-10 1988-1990. My final tour was as XO of NAS Moffett Field, California 90-91 under CAPT Tim Quigley. I worked for Cheif Trainer in the Airframes Shop, and it was one of the greatest times in my life. I have never before or since had as many friends as I did in the Navy. The memories are as wonderful as the days spent before sunrise at 3:00am pre-flighting T-29 and C117 aircraft for the days flights. He entered flight training as a Naval Aviation Cadet (NAVCAD) in 1958 and was commissioned Ensign USNR and designated a Naval Aviator in October 1959. Initial operational assignment was flying the P2V-5FS in VP-6 at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii from Nov 1959 to Jan 1963. Participated in 3 Western Pacific deployments while assigned as Navigation Officer, Classified Material Control Officer and Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer and Patrol Plane Commander and augmented to USN. His next assignment was VT-29 NAS Corpus Christi, Texas as Navigation Flight Instructor and Power Plants Division Officer and he attained Aircraft Commander Designation in the C-117, C-118 and T-29 aircraft. Selected for USNPS, Monterey, California in 1963 CDR Masters attained Aircraft Commander Designation in S-2 type Anti-Submarine Warfare aircraft and completed college courses in Aeronautical Engineering, Naval Warfare and Industrial Safety and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree May 1966. CDR MASTERS next received orders to the Aircraft Carrier U.S. Ranger CVA-61 as Ships Assistant Navigator in 1966 to 1968. During this tour CDR MASTERS qualified as Navigator, Deep Draft Command, Officer of the Deck in-Port and Underway, Boating Officer, Command Duty Officer and Conning alongside during Underway Replenishment. He also undertook the development and the rewriting of all boating, ships control, duty officer and emergency ship handling books for the U.S. Ranger. During this tour he completed several deployments to the South China Sea operating from Yankee Station in combat support of U.S. Forces in Vietnam. In 1968 CDR MASTERS next received orders to the ARMED FORCES SENIOR STAFF COLLEGE, Norfolk, VA completing studies in World affairs, Political assessment, Major Staff Warfare planning and War Plans Development. CDR MASTERS next tour of duty was with the NAVAL AVIATION SAFETY CENTER as assistant editor of Naval Safety publications for Surface Ships, Submarines and Aircraft from 1968 to 1969. CDR MASTERS then began his second tour with VP-6 at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii from 1969 to 1972. Prior to reporting to VP-6 in November, 1968 as Maintenance Officer, CDR MASTERS attended P-3 Orion aircraft transition training in VP-31 at NAS Moffett Field, California earning Patrol Plane Commander designation. He served as Aviation Safety Officer, Maintenance Department Head and Patrol Plane Commander in the P-3A Orion aircraft. During this assignment CDR MASTERS completed several deployments to Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. He served as Officer-In-Charge of Naval Air Forces Vietnam at NAF Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. He then received orders to COMPATWINGTWO as staff Maintenance officer achieving the highest levels of Pacific Fleet Operational Readiness and Full Systems Capability for all assigned Patrol Squadrons. For his final career assignment CDR MASTERS received orders to NAS Lemoore, California to implement a new method of Weapons System Development (FIT) for the F/A-18 Hornet strike fighter. The F/A-18 Hornet was developed to replace the former F-4 Phantom fighter and the A-7E attack aircraft. As a result of the Maintainability and Reliability improvement of the F/A-18 strike fighter, maintenance man-hours per flight hour were reduced by over 80%. After completing this most satisfying assignment CDR MASTERS retired with 25 years of military service. Assigned to VP 30 from 1982-1986. Worked the AE shop, went to Material Control and later end my tour as Maintenance Control Day shift supervisor. Was selected to Chief in 1985 and selected to LDO in 1986. After Officer Indoc in Aug 1986, I was ordered to VP-56 as the Maintenance Control Officer and the Material Control Officer. After the NAS Sigonella, Sicily deployment in 1989, I transferred to AIMD NAS Jacksonville, Florida as the Support Equipment Officer. One year later I terminated shore duty for orders to VR-22 in NS Rota, Spain. Two years as the Assistant Maintenance Officer and one year as Department Head, we decommisioned VR-22 in the summer of 1993. My last tour took me to Meridian Mississippi as the Assistant Air operations Officer. For a squadron Maintenance Officer to be able to work at a NAS Base Operations was an enjoyable tour of duty. After 21 years and my selection to LCDR, I retired as a LT. That was a family decision to turn down LCDR and retire. I enjoyed the time that I spent in each duty station and all the good friends that I have remembered. I answered in the affimative and was detached to be a lifeguard at one of the base swimming pools. I really didn't get to meet the squadron for five months. We lived in the old WW II barracks/firetraps until the brick ones were finished in I believe the end of 1969. A change of rate to TD (Tradevsman) in 1971 moved me to NAS Corpus Christi, Texas and elsewhere around the USA until my retirement in 1988 here at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington.
