Memorial Picture "...HAAS, AO Edward J...My Father, Edward J. Haas, passed away April 2004. Dad was an AO and was air crew in P2V aircraft based in Japan sometime between 1956-1959. I think that he was based out of NAS Atsugi, Japan or Youkouska. He was part of VAH-8 onboard the Midway for the 1959 to 1960 cruise. I don't know what squadron he was in but he had a jacket patch with a picture of a donkey on it and it read Fergie's Flying Jackasses. Dad never talked a lot about it and I was just wondering what his job might have been and what kind of guy he was then. I was a destroyer sailer and Dad always made sure that I knew that he was aircrew and NOT ships crew. If anybody knew him I would be grateful for anything that you could tell me. Daniel J. Memorial Picture "...HABERMAN, AMHC Elmer J...My father, AMHC Elmer J. Haberman Retired, passed away about a year ago in California. I have had the pleasure of reviewing many photos and memorabilia he had left behind and was able to enjoy many memories. Of course, prominent in my mind was the many years he was stationed in NAS Alameda, California with VR-2 and VP-9. I have recently looked at the slides he took in the late 1950's detachment tours to NAS Kodiak, Alaska and NAS Adak, Alaska. I wanted to pass on to his former Shipmates, that my father loved his Navy time, was active in the Fleet Reserve and always had a warm spot for his time with VP-9. I also want to thank you for the good memories...Son Rich Haberman rhaberman@comcast.net..." [05JAN2004]

Memorial Picture "...HAGY, Captain Jim...For those of us that knew Jim, we are much the better for it. His sincere friendship, quick wit, superior intelligence, and willingness to get any job well done was the composition of an exceptional Naval Officer and fine man. Without exception Jim was one of the very best TACCOs that ever flew a ASW mission. Jim was also very instrumental in VP-49 receiving a record three Meritorious Units Commendations for its 1975 deployment to NAS Sigonella, Sicily, its 1976 Ascension Island Operations, and its deployment to Iceland in 1976 (a periord of only 22 months). Jim was surely one of the very best - and will be sorely missed. Our heartfelt prayers and thoughts to Judy and family. Service would be held next Saturday August 1, 2009 at the Duke U. Memorial Picture "...Shipmate Pix HAMMOND, Robert Laverne Sr...My grandfather, Robert Laverne Hammond, was a bellygunner on a PB4Y-1, and served with VPB-104. Mr. Hammond passed away at age 78, in Evansville, Indiana, and is interred at Maury cemetary in Richmond, Virginia. I do not know which crew he flew with in VPB-104, but my dad says that the pilots last name may have been Mcdonald, or something similar to this. My grandfather didn't talk much about the war, and we didn't press him for much info. He did however, when I was a kid, show me several crew photo's, and I think his plane's nose art may have been a girl in a grass skirt, possibly a hula girl. He also show me a couple of medals, and badges, and I know one was a distinguished flying cross. I recently discovered VPNavy and a few other related sites, and haven't found any information on his crew. His name is on the missing Shipmates list for VPB-104 so I assume someone may have some information on him, or at least knew him. If anyone knows of any information I can get on his crew, exploits, or any photo's that may be posted I would very much like to hear from you. Thanks!..." Contributed by Matthew C. HANKS, John E. portage@uwyo.edu "...Those who know me generally like me, even though we might have radically different political or religious opinions. Some people do have a black hatred of me, but I don't like them either.   I have a good sense of ironical and satirical humor and I love clever practical jokes, especially when I'm the victim. I am a stalwart friend, although I love to point out my friends faults (especially imaginary ones) in front of other people.   I am considered an eccentric, but most of my eccentricities are simply novel ways of solving a problem - like wearing loud reading glasses so I don't lose them all the time, or wearing an engineer hat (to promote railroads), as opposed to wearing the usual farmer hat.   I can develop the most avid interests in the strangest of things, like the color of old rust versus the color of new rust, but I find sports to be unutterably boring, like watching some tedious card game. Maybe it's the rules that make them so dull . Who knows? I like to eat ball park hotdogs though.   I love to speculate and think "outside of the box", pretending that apples are oranges after all. I don't mind appearing the fool, if it promotes something worthwhile, like standing up to authority or annoying some hypocritical Republican.   Most of the books that I love were never assigned in school. I was usually drawn to them because of recommendations or some sort of affinity. Most important were the writings of Paul Goodman, Thorstein Veblen, Paul Fussell, Bertrand Russell, Gore Vidal, Bertrand Russell, H. L. Mencken, Ambrose Bierce, Pearl Buck, Jane Austen, Jessamyn West, Mark Twain, Mari Sandoz, James T. Farrell, and many others.   My brother and I were born in Chicago in the late 1940's while my father was at the U. of Chicago School of Social Work. Afterwards we grew up in several small towns near Lansing, Michigan, and we had the typical high school experience (bad). I went on to Earlham College for less than a year (kicked out for drinking beer), and then I enlisted in the navy from 1965 to 1968. Served with VP-5 from January 1966 through June 1967 and RVAW-120 (Training Squadron for E2-A Carrier Early Warning A/C) from July 1967 through October 1968 (bored, anti-war, and disliked the military chickenshit).   Upon discharge I entered Antioch College in Ohio and developed a love-hate relationship with a quasi-mentor history professor (who triggered the mixed blessing of an intellectual awakening). I married a French woman named Martine who I met in England. It ended in divorce in 1979 (She is now a French professor in Florida). Some years later I married my second wife Saralyn Laughlin in 1984, and we divorced amicably in 1997. (She lives in Ft. Collins and we are still friends - without the fire.) I went on to get advanced degrees in Adult Education, American Studies, and a B.A. in Elementary Education. I wasn't a professional student, but just someone on the wrong path, trying to use academia to find my way.   I've held a lot of different jobs over the years, farm worker, store manager, secretary, yeoman, clerk, railroad timekeeper, parking ticket clerk, sheet metal worker, recreation director, graduate student, adult education director, 4th grade teacher, derrick climber, and now an archivist.   I was rescued by a University literature professor (who I hardly knew) when he pulled some strings to find a job for me in The American Heritage Center Archives. Archive processing has worked ideally for me because I am in a congenial intellectual atmosphere, even though most of my colleagues are highly introverted and their silence and bureaucratic timidity can be extremely irritating at times.   I subscribe to Progressive, Church and State, Harpers, New Yorker, and sometimes other magazines like The Nation. I read the Casper Star Tribune and I regularly read liberal web sites, but also a couple that are are far right (just to keep up with their lies.) I find George Bush, Bill O 'Reilly and Limbaugh to be so utterly dishonest that I just can't listen to them, though I do listen critically to NPR (National Propaganda Radio). I also like to argue with locals on the E-Laramie web site under the name "Patriot".   After 50 it is largely "patch, patch, patch", but my health is still pretty good. I have to use an oxygen mask at night for Sleep Apnea, and I have been taking lithium for many years for manic depression (sounds terrible - but it isn't - at least in my case so far). I used to do Aikido and run Marathons, but those days are over. At this point I want to lose weight to improve my breathing - not so much my appearance.   Like a lot of men I am interested in military history because it really is the story of the modern world from public relations to gulf war syndrome. My father was a conscientious objector. My first father in law flew an attack plane in the French-Algerian War and my second father-in-law was a liaison officer with Gen. Stilwell in Burma. I am still occaisionally trying to research a battle at Phnum Ga in Burma that my second father in law described to me in tears, because half of his unit was wiped out. I know an enormous amount of stuff about military history, but this battle continues to stump me because there are many different versions and accounts, including his.   A very close friend is a retired bomber pilot and airplane modeler and we get together every Sunday to compare our model work (his work is museum perfect), and we watch war movies (very critically). Right-wingers are often horrified to discover left wingers llike me who know more than they do about military subjects.   I have maybe 400 airplane models, 100 ship models, 100 armor models, and a model railroad which fills half of my basement. The railroad is centered around Milwaukee harbor's steel industry and it includes many bridges, steel mills, refineries, coke plants, scrap yards, and a blast furnace. There is a lot of political satire and humor. I've modeled friends and I poke political fun at the demons of our political system. My living room has been converted into a workshop with fish tank, stereo and TV. It is not a typical bachelor pad. You won't find pinups and beer bottles. I prefer Hornsby's cider, display models and bookcases. It is as disorderd as any other pad though.   I cancelled cable TV after the OJ fiasco, and I feel a lot better for it. I'm now convinced that the main purpose of TV is to promote a low grade fear and anxiety in order to sell products, keep up false illusions, and elect criminals. So I'm better without it. I do miss out on some things though.   I think it is accurate to describe myself as a left-wing radical and more or less a pacifist when it comes to militarism. Vietnam was the turning point. It was then I realized that the people who matter in this country could care less about the rest of us - so much so that we were truly expendable throw aways.   To my mind 911 was a repeat of Hitler's Reichstag Fire. It was not terrorism, but treason - an inside job followed by a protection racket to make us blindly loyal to the Bush regime. I also believe that the anthrax attacks were the same thing. The Wellstone family plane crash proved it further. Since 911, I have felt an almost constant low grade nausea when it comes to how easy it is for useless rich criminals to control this country.   I try to stay as politically active as I can in a Republican state that makes it impossible for opposition parties to get on the ballot. I am part of several liberal support groups so that we can support one another in the midst of the machobation life style that is Wyoming.   You now have a fairly good idea of what I'm like from this description. To my mind intellect and the play of ideas is more important than intelligence. (My French wife was an intelligent part-time advertising model, but not intellectual. My second wife was very intelligent, but not very intellectual.) Both marriages were successful at 8 years and 13 years, though they ended in divorce.   P.S. I have tabby cat named Woody (After the Cheers actor) and a prissy white cat named Heidi (Who hides, but sleeps on top of me at night) Woody is usually getting between me and the computer..." HARDY, John Ingolf http://www.usna.com/history/classof1940/H.htm "..John's first duty was in PENSACOLA. She took part in the battles of Midway, Santa Cruz, Guadalcanal and several night surface actions until she was torpedoed on the night of 30 November, 1943, in the battle of Tassafaronga. After duty on the Staff, ComTaskFor 65, and a few months ashore at Guadalcanal, he was ordered to flight training, where he married Dolores Webster of Stillwater, Minnesota, on 27 April, 1943. PG School and MIT gave John a Master of Science Degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Duty in OpNav in the Guided Missile Division was followed by a return to sea as XO of VP-1 operating out of NAS Whidbey Island, Washington and NAS Kodiak, Alaska. The Korean War brought a 6-month deployment to Okinawa and to Washington, as the Head of the Installations Branch, Armament Division, BuAer. 1953 brought duty as C.O., VP-22 in Hawaii and Alaska, then on to become Experimental Officer at China Lake, CA. Orders as XO of PRINCETON in 1957 saw twelve out of fifteen months on board operating in the Western Pacific. In 1959, John became Naval Aide and Executive Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of the Navy (R&D) and in 1961, he attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. In 1962, John was C.O. of the oiler TALUGA, and in 1963 C.O. of HORNET (CVS-12). In 1964, he took command of Naval Ordnance Test Station, China Lake, and on March 1, 1967, he retired and became Assistant to the President of Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland. Case and Western Reserve U. had decided to combine (Case Western Reserve University) and Dr. Robert Morse was to be the President of the new University. John had known him as Assistant Secretary of the Navy R&D and he prevailed on John to take a job and do the organizational planning. John agreed, but to stay only one year. It was a challenging and exciting job; John then moved on to another challenge in August, 1968, to become Director of Engineering at the Government and Aeronautical Products Division of Honeywell Inc. in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dee and John truly enjoyed being back in Minnesota except for the cold winters and the summer mosquitoes! In the spring of 1975, both had some health problems and they decided it was time really to retire and go back to Coronado. Dee has had two open heart surgeries (1976 & 1981) to replace the mitral valve but she is really doing quite well. As she says "If you have to have problems, it is good to have something where the spare parts are really quite good." John is still a part-time employee of Honeywell, able to keep abreast of the interesting world of R&D. Son, Randy (USNA '66) is a Captain, USNR. He and Jane are in Seattle, where he is Superintendent of City Power and Light. Daughter, Janet, is in Boston with her husband, Stanford classmate Tom Willson, and their two children. After responsible positions at Stanford, and Harvard, she does full-time parenting and part-time instructing Senior Citizens in aerobics..." [01JUN2003]

I replaced Gene Whitlock on MB8, a P2V5 (CW call sign 8E95, voice call sign Derrick and BuNo 124879). The AD was Ed Willis, AO Joe Higgarita, AT Bob Kirby. I was the AL (radio). The Pilot was Lt. John Keener and the Copilot was LTjg Harold Suddof. Deployments were NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada, NAS Keflavik, Iceland, and NAF Port Lyautey, Morocco. Some references by others in VP-3 wedsite refer to the P2V lost on the Icelandic glacier. I was there. MB8 stopped over in Norfold for submarine exercises. The rest of the squadron went directly to Iceland. With a stopover in Argentia to handle some mechanical problem, MB8 took off for Iceland. Enroute, I began to get radio inquiries from base radio and a squadron plane (MB6 ?) about contact with the lost plane. MB8's crew also spent one night circling the crash site with an Icelander aboard to communicate with the ground parties trying to reach the plane. I still have news releases and the pamphlet from the memorial service. According to those the Neptune took off at 2:00 p.m. 12/17/53. It reported in at 2:17 100 miles southeast of the base (VM). The wreckage was found on 12/18/53. Three survivors were reported (a wrong report), and survival gear was dropped. As I recall, one of the dead was found outside the plane was brought down. Weather precluded any further recue efforts. VP-3 lost another plane while in Iceland in 1954. I still have a photograph of that. I ran off the end of the runway in England. All crew members walked away. I know it was Crew #1 that was involved, but am not sure of the plane. I would welcome any contact with past squadron members..." HAWKINS, AW2 Ed sales@coolmilitary.com "...It all started when my little brother Joe (number 3 of 6 boys) decided to join the Navy. What a shocker! He "was" the rebel of the family, but it wasn't the fact that he was leaving the brood that amazed us, but the fact that he was joining the Navy! The Navy? I didn't know anything about the navy. It conjured up a lot of images of sailing ships, Captain Ahab, and the Hollywood blockbuster MIDWAY in "sensurround". Well, off he went to boot camp and we didn't hear much about him for a while. I was working as a machinist making oil drilling equipment for offshore wells, when the market took a dive. My other brother John (number 4) was graduating High School and we both ended up thinking about what a great time Joe must be having sailing the seven seas. Joe went in without a rate and the first thing he told us was, Don't Join unless you read the "Secret Book" that only the recruiters have! "I wish I did" he said, and now I'm a paint scraping specialist. This was a book that that showed every job in the Navy. It was really thick and in full color. I read the whole thing many times, and kept stopping at the "Aircrew" page. Wow, look at those cool flight suites. My favorite quote was, "work in an air conditioned environment". What could be better! I was hooked. I'm signing up today I said. "Wait a minute" said John, don't you want to wait until after Summer is over? He had me there, so we signed up to go in together on the Delayed Entry Program. We spent that Summer in California sleeping in his car and hitting the surf at different places all along the Coast. I forgot to mention, on the day we signed up, guess what? There were no spots available for AW! I was mortified. Well then I said, I'm not going in. Just then, the computers all went down (wow, computers in 1983). "You'll have to come back tomorrow", they said. Well, my luck was shining the next day, because for some unknown reason a spot opened up for me, and I was in. Yahooo! Here's List of where I ended up. Bootcamp in San Diego (1983), NACCS NAS Pensacola, Florida (1984), NAS Memphis, Tennessee A school (1984), NAS Moffett Field, California (1984), SERE (1984), VP-1 Screaming Eagles at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii. Crew #1. Sensor 1 (AW-2). P-3c Orion (1985-1987), with 6 month deployments to Japan (Osaka and NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan). I had so many adventures that I could not even begin to list them here. But, I did have a desire to have t-shirts made. While in the Philippines, I remember sketching out ideas with a pencil and giving them to the "t-shirt guy". He would then come back in a couple days with the finished shirt. It was always wrong, and the colors weren't right. But hey, I had a custom t-shirt. It was so cool. I also had a lot of fun creating our "Crew Patches". I really couldn't draw that well, but the crew liked them anyway. After I was discharged, I decided to pursue a design career and spent 3 years learning how to draw. Now I design Hiking Boots for a living. Who would have thought? Well I kept going back to wanting cool t-shirts, with the aircrew logo on them. So one day last month, I sat down, scanned in my aircrew wings and created a flaming tentacle logo. And that was the start of http://www.coolmilitary.com. I loved the military, and thought people that served in it were cool. So hence the name. Then I started using the "flaming tentacles" on other types of military logos. My Brother John wanted one with the Navy Dolphins on it (he went Nukes). My Dad, who was in the Army, wanted an army t-shirt. Well, you can see where this was going. So I just keep adding to the collection..." Personal WebSite: http://www.coolmilitary.com [14JAN2004]

Would love to hear from anyone who gave up their saturdays & helped build the baseball field at the orphanage. I've got some great pix. I photographed all you guys doing something or another. (Some will never get published..after all, "What happens on Okinawa, stays on Okinawa". Loved my 3+ years with the squadron. Even my first day when I was sent to the line shack to get a bucket of Prop-wash and was told that I needed a chit from disbursements, who said I needed a signed requisition form from somebody who said I had to talk to the Chief and ask him what kind of bucket I should get to put it into. I got over it. Anybody know the where-a-bouts of Adm. Joseph A. Jaap? I was his newsreel cameraman for my last 9 mos. All the squadrons that came back from Nam between January '66 & Sept. '66 got their homecoming on TV News that night. The Admiral always watched the news with his stop-watch. He timed how much coverage each station gave us. He had a helicopter fly my film to Seattle where a motorcycle cop took it to the lab where they processed it, made copies, & rushed it to all 3 TV stations so they had it in time for the evening news. He really wanted everybody to see you guys when you came home! The Navy taught me how get things done, how to navigate, negotiate, barter, etc., & anytime it gets rough, to lean into the wind.
