MASSENBURG, REAR ADMIRAL Walter B. http://www.mid-atlantic-log.net/KeySpeaker.htm "...A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Rear Admiral Massenburg graduated from Washington and Jefferson College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Physics and was commissioned in November 1970. He commenced flight training in January 1971 and was designated a Naval Aviator the following November. After recruiting duty at Naval District, Pittsburgh as part of Operation Feedback, Rear Admiral Massenburg was detailed to VP-45 from August 1972 until January 1976. He participated in one Atlantic and two Mediterranean deployments while assigned as Legal Officer, ASW Attack Officer, Nuclear Weapons Training Officer, and Quality Assurance Officer. From February 1976 to June 1978, he served in VX-1, participating in the operational evaluation of the P-3C Update II, Harpoon Missile System, DICASS Sonobuoy and numerous detachments in support of special operations. In August 1978, Rear Admiral Massenburg reported to Naval Facility, Antigua, West Indies, as the Executive Officer. During his tenure as the Operations Officer he deployed to NS Rota, Spain / NAF Lajes, Azores, Portugal; the squadron was awarded the COMNAVAIRLANT Battle "E" award. Rear Admiral Massenburg was later selected as a member of the Chief of Naval Operations sponsored Antisubmarine Warfare Continuum (OP-113C) in the office of the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Manpower, Personnel and Training. In February 1986, he was assigned to the staff of the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Air Warfare) as the Antisubmarine Warfare Aircraft Inventory Coordinator (OP-508C2). He reported to VP-6 as the Executive Officer in March 1987. Rear Admiral Massenburg commanded VP-6 at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii from March 1988 until March 1989. During this time, the squadron deployed to NAS Adak, Alaska and participated in RIMPAC 88. Rear Admiral Massenburg subsequently attended the Naval War College where he received a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies, graduating with distinction in June 1990. He then served on the staff of the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff as the Branch Chief, Tactical Forces Branch in the Force Structure, Resources and Assessment Directorate (J-8). Rear Admiral Massenburg was selected as a Material Professional in May 1992 and completed the Program Management Course at the Defense Systems Management College, Fort Belvoir, Virginia. I went to VX-1 at NAS Boca Chica, Florida for 26 months from 1959 to 1961. VX-1 had Air Ships (Blimps), HSS-1 and HSS-2 Helicopters, S2Fs, SNB Beach Craft, P5M Sea Planes and two P2 Neptune Aircraft. The P2V Neptunes were the pride of the Anti-Submarine Warfare. Events of the time was the Bay of Pigs invasion, 90 miles south, in Cuba and Hurricane Donna, which hit just north of NAS, Key West, destroying most structures and every bridge in it's path, up the overseas highway, US1 to the mainland, below Homestead, Fl. August 1961 I was transferred to the USS Mullinnix, out of Norfolk, Va., that then went to Key West with new electronics to train with VX-1, chasing submarines. Rolled to VX-1 in NAS Patuxent River, Maryland in late 1996. I was commissioned as an LDO Ensign in 1999 and headed off to HC-8 in NAS Norfolk, Virginia as a Det Maintenance Officer. Promoted to LT(jg) and headed back to VP-47 now over at MCBH Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii as Maintenance Material Control Officer. Promoted to LT. Left the Island for the las time in December 2005 and headed to Naval Surface Warfare Center, Panama City, FL. I retired in December 2008 with 25 years. I left the Composite Navy in April of 1962 for VX-1 at NAS Key West ( NAS Boca Chica, Florida), Florida. In addition to Rolling a Tool-Box, I flew as S2F, P2V and P-3A (148885 & 149668) Crewmember while attached to VX-1 until April of 1964. In April of 1964 I went West to the VP Navy after ADJ (B) School and P-3 Flight Engineers School. Flew as Flight Engineer with VP-9 from January 1965 to November 1969 and with VP-46 from August 1970 until April of 1974. From May 1974 until I retired in September of 1975 I had a very Plain Jane, Very Un-Interesting Job as an Instructor on Jet Engines at NAMTRADET 1008 at NAS Miramar, California. After the war went to Shanghai and flew courier around the area, Trans to VPB-25 when VH-6 went back for decom. Squadron moved to Yokohama in early 1946 and continued courier out of there. Back to MCAS/NAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii and NAS Alameda, California for VPB-25 decom in summer of 1946. Mustered out of reserve in TI and reenlisted in Regular Navy, taking a bust from 1st to 3rd in so doing. Went to VR-5 in Sand Point and NAS Adak, Alaska working on check crews, loading crews, gas crew and flight orderly. Went to Radio Tech school at NAS Corpus Christi, Texas and NAS Memphis, Tennessee then to an airgroup in Charleytown, RI in 1948. Went to AEW school at NAS Norfolk, Virginia then VX-1 and ZX-11 in NAS Boca Chica, Florida in 1949. Back to NAS Memphis, Tennessee to teach in AT School in 1951. Shipped over for VP-4 in NAS Whidbey Island, Washington in 1956. No more than checked in when we were moved to Okinawa. Rotated to VP-1 in NAS Whidbey Island, Washington in 1958. While serving in VX-1, I was fortunate to visit 52 countries and five continents in two years, testing and evaluating, what was then the new P-3C. The Navy even sent me to a, "Training School," at Lockheed, in Burbank, CA, just ten miles from my home in Pasadena. My parents and friends, began calling me, "The Admiral," as I returned to the Lockheed Aircraft facilities many times, during the two years I was assigned to VX-1. My fellow crew members (Crew 5) flew daily into the infamous, "Bermuda Triangle," with no problem. I was just a "punk kid" of 19 years-old and yet visited the top and bottom of the Earth, as well as virtiously every part of the world in between. While flying, I tested the binariy code of ASW warfare, and each of the sonobouy devices, one of which blew up in my face. It was quite an incident. The internal compression tube blew me off my feet, but with no injury. However, it threw a piece of shrapnel through the overhead bulking. The crew and Lockheed supervisors soon discovered the ejection round for the internal Sonobouy chute was too powerful (like placing a .45 bullet in a .38 pistol). Yes I loved every day I was there. I was then reassigned to VP-47 at NAS Moffett Field, California. I spent my last years in the Navy teaching the AO Shop about the P-3C. Our crew received the first, "E" (excellence) rating for an ASW P-3C aircraft. I took a flight home every weekend, to visit my girlfriend (my first wife) and parents. With just 11 months remaining, VP-47 was assigned to NAF Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. I spent the next and my last year in the Navy, flying ASW tracts in the Tonkin Gulf. The squadron was then reassigned to the NAS in the Alutiaten Islands. Talk about a culture shock, and a physical shock. The squadron went from 100 degree and 100 degree huminity to 47 below zero in one week. I remember playing football in 21 below zero weather, thinking this was wonderful. Although these memories are nearly 40 years-old, I still recall each hour in the air, every crew member by name, every flight to another country, every bar, barracks and "belly load." For me, from 18 to 21 years-old, it was the time of my life. For America, it was a time of change. I am proud to say I was a part of the American Military and moreover, an Aviation Ordanance Aircrewman on the Lockeed P-3C. It was a time to remember..." [29JUN2004]

I was one of the original In-Flight Techs trained at Burbank, and one of the few AT's to ever qualify as a Second Engineer in P-3s. I was the IFT on Crew 5. Chief J. T. Strickland was the Crew Chief, and ADJ-1 Joe Logue was the F/E. I left VX-1 in ' 71 and was transferred to VP-49, and made a couple of deployments to NAS Keflavik, Iceland. I got out after 8 years, in ' 72, and worked for Lockheed for nearly 26 years. I'm in NAS Patuxent River, Maryland now, working on the E-6B program. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy and was commissioned in May 1981. During his tenure the squadron conducted their first Hellfire missile live fire exercise, deployed three (including their first) armed-helicopter detachments, and deployed the first LAMPS MkIII detachment embarked in an aircraft carrier for an extended deployment. In November 2000, he reported to Naval Air Systems Command as the Deputy for Operations on the staff of the Deputy Commander for Acquisition and Operations, (AIR-1.0). While I served with VP-45 as second wiper, I worked in Power Plants for Chief Ray Fussell. I left Bermuda in May of 1959 for Shore duty and the training command. I was assigned to VP-5 In 1964 after the rag at VP-30. I was second wiper during my training on Capt Pates Crew. Great bunch of guys there. I took over as PC on crew 4 and stayed with them till we transition to the P3. I was with Crew 8 then with Bob May as the PPC and Lt Williams as PP2P. 1st Tech Anderson. I left VP-5 in September 1968 and reported to VX-1 where I flew P3's and ran into old friends from my past squadrons...Namely CDR Agnue from VP-45 Bermuda and AW1 Josh Pierce from VP-5. Plus lots of others. After I left VX-1 I went to the Tail hook navy for a couple of years before retiring in June 1974...Golly been retired now for 23 years....LOL...I just moved back to Beeville to retire. He graduated from Fort Pierce Central High School in May 1976 and enlisted in the Navy under the Delayed Entry Program (DEP) in July of the same year. Master Chief Welten completed recruit training and Operations Specialist Class "A" school in 1977. His first assignment was aboard USS BADGER (FF 1071) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He qualified as an Anti-Submarine Air Controller (ASAC) in 1981 and reported to a pre-commissioning unit, USS FAHRION (FFG 22), homeported in Mayport, Florida. After completing Anti-Submarine Air Tactical Control Operator (ATACO) training in 1986, he reported to another pre-commissioning unit, USS BUNKER HILL (CG 52), in San Diego, California. During this tour of duty, he was selected and advanced to Chief Petty Officer. Following a homeport shift and a two-year tour in Yokosuka, Japan, Master Chief Welten served as Air Safety Officer at AEGIS Combat Systems Center (ACSC), Wallops Island, Virginia. In 1992 he reported for duty aboard the pre-commissioning unit USS VICKSBURG (CG 69) in Mayport, Florida where he was selected for advancement to Senior Chief.
