HistoryA BIT OF HISTORY: "00APR96--The Naval Air Reserve recently provided peacetime support to Joint Inter-Agency Task Force East Counter-Drug Operations in Panama using a Fleet Maritime Mobile Operations Control Center (MOCC) from Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. MOCC Willow Grove deployed to Howard Air Force Base, Panama, with its state-of-the-art Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence (C4I) system. Tasked with demonstrating C4I capabilities, MOCC watch teams provided brief and debrief, flight-following, safety-of-flight and complete mission planning services to active Navy Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) crews from VP-5 and VP-92..." http://www.ncts.navy.mil/navresfor/nrn/past/apr96/page2b.html

UPDATE "...I would just like to take a moment to let you know a little bit more about the design of the FIRST VP-92 Reserve Patch. First of all, I'm not a member of any military division but I am the son of one who was part of the VP-92 squadron. I understand that there is some question of the 'designer' of this logo. Let me tell you that my fathers friend and crew member, Lee Bureau, was the one who developed this logo. I'm not sure how to get in touch with him but my father would. My fathers' name is Lionel "Lee" Cabana and you can e-mail him at alohalee@mint.net. Lets give credit where credit is due!...Christopher "Lee" Cabana kblkbear@cs.com..." [29OCT2000]

UPDATE "...The original patch was used from the establishment of VP-92 (or perhaps re-establishment since there was a VP-92 back in WW2 with no connection at all to the present reserve squadron!) in 1970 up to about the 1976 bicentennial, when the present 'minuteman' patch came into use... I was told that the original VP-92 patch came from one of VP-92's direct predecessor reserve units, VP-911, VP-912, VP-913, or VP-914 and that it may have actually been a crew patch and not a squadron patch with whatever predecessor unit it came from. I do not know this for sure. A few of us VP-92 guys pooled our resources a few months ago and had 100% accurate copies made of an old VP-92 patch that an 'old timer' loaned us...the Navy brought out the new rules that limit squadron patches to no more than 4.5 inches in diameter. Unfortunately, the old VP-92 patch is closer to 4.75 inches in diameter so technically, it is 'illegal' to wear the original VP-92 squadron patch...Incidentally, Navy rules since the 70s at least have 'outlawed' any patches that have a 'morbid' theme so the original VP-92 patch with the guillotine could not have been done today...these rules are supposed to grandfather in any existing patch designs so I think a case can be made that the original VP-92 guillotine squadron patch, even after about 27 years of 'broken service', could still be 'legally' brought back into use today if the unit really wanted to do so..." UPDATE "...As far as the VP-92 patch goes, I remember a pencil sketched original version of the "Guillotine spanning the ocean over a sub periscope" , sitting on Bruce Bickner's and Moose Muisuk's desk before it went to the Commander's desk for approval..."
