HistoryA BIT OF HISTORY: "...I can remember one flight that was a real adventure. We flew an Admiral up the west coast of South America to a military camp at Corinto, which is located on the northwest side of Nicaragua, that had belonged to the USA and was being turned over to the Nicaraguan Army. We arrived in the evening and every one went ashore for the party except one crewman and myself who stood guard while the plane was anchored in the middle of the bay. That night gunshot was heard, echoeing over the dark waters, continuously into the night. We were on edge, not knowing what to expect from the local "wild men" so we maintained a watch around the plane with pistols drawn. Suddenly we heard a shout coming out of the black night. It was Lt. Ball. He hollered to start the engines quickly. I did and in a couple minutes he came rushing forward and grabbed the controls, went full throttle and off we went. He told me later that the native Army started to celebrate in a big way after the ceremony that turned the base over to them. Then things got out of hand quickly, with gunfire all around the group. They ran for the docks, dodging the gunfire, and quickly rowed the borrowed row boat to the plane. No one got hurt but it was a dangerous time. So that is another sea story for you and I don't doubt you have many..." Contributed by Bill Barnett wbarnett2@cfl.rr.com [13DEC2000]
