ACKERSON, Gary garyaaz@yahoo.com "...I joined VP-42 in the spring of 1963 when we were transitioning from P5Ms to P2V5s. I flew radio and jez. in crews 1, 7, and 5. I've never since felt as much a part of a group as I did in the crews I served with. We still have some P2Vs in the boneyard here in Tucson. I'd love to hear from any Shipmates..." ADAMS, AWCS(AW) Mike Retired yardmarker08@gmail.com "...I entered into VP aviation as a Julie/ECM operator as an AX3 in 1964. My first squadron was VP-42, Crew-8, basically flying in the "maintenance officer's" crew (LCDR Ara Sarkisian and LCDR Marshall Martin). Leaving VP-42 with the disestablishment, I went to FAETUPAC NAS North Island, San Diego, California as a TACCO ASA-16 Instructor. FAETUPAC moved to NAS Moffett Field, California in 1969. In 1970 I was transferred to VP-4 as an SS1. I flew until I had blood pressure problems which landed me in Schedules. I remained there until 1976, when I transferred to CNAP Natops. After a two year tour there, I was fortunate to fly with the Canadian Forces (CF) (VP-415 and VP-405). With the decommissioning of the ARGUS, the AW billet went away and was replaced by an NFO billet in the AROURA airframe. In July 1980 I landed in ASWOC NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan, ending up as the Senior Enlisted, Assistant Ops, Opcon, and Briefing/Debriefing Officer. In 1985 I came to Dam Neck as the ASWOC Watch Officer Instructor. While there, I incorporated Watch Officer "field trips" to NOPF Dam Neck, Bldg NH-95 Norfolk to "tie-in" NavFac, Command Watch Office, and the Command Center. I left this tour far a tour at ASWOC NSF Diego Garcia. Leaving there, I followed Harry Niestrath through the Senior Enlisted Academy, and then doing my twilight tour in FCDSSA Dam Neck, working on the op program for the ASWMOD's on the carriers. I was fortunate to work on ALL the carriers active in 1992, except the USS Constellation and USS Enterprise which were in the yards. I retired as an AWCS(AW) August 01, 1992 and still live down the road from Dam Neck in Virginia Beach..." [25DEC2010]

BARKLEY, AVCM Chuck Retired w9bik@arrl.net "...After avionics training at VP-31 / FAETUPAC, NAS North Island, San Diego, California (1962-63, AXAN/AX3), I was a ground pounder with VP-42 (1963-65, AX3/AX2, P2's) at NAS North Island, San Diego, California and deployed to NAS Iwakuni, Japan (changed our homeport to NAS Whidbey Island, Washington while in Japan), and went on detachments to FASU/NSA DaNang, Republic of Vietnam, NAS Cubi Point, Philippines, and NS Sangley Point, Philippines. After VP-42, I went to AVI(B) school (Class 5-41), then on to VP-50 (1965-67, AX2, P5's) at NAS North Island, San Diego, California (deployed to NS Sangley Point, Philippines, and NAF Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam). After VP-50, I taught AV(A) and AVI(B) school at NATTC NAS Memphis, Tennessee (1967-70, AX2/AX1), then went to VS-24 (AX1, 1970, S2's) at NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island for a very short tour (made two short cruises on the USS Intrepid, including a hurricane "ride" off Bermuda) prior to going into the TAR program. As a TAR, I was stationed at NAS Lakehurst, New Jersey (1970-75, AX1/AXC), NAS Point Mugu, California (1976-79, AXC/AXCS), and at NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania (1979-83, AXCS/AVCM), where I retired as the NAS Command Master Chief. After retiring, I worked for over 12 years at NAWC Warminster developing software for P-3's. Now, I develop digital cable TV headend equipment at Motorola, Horsham, PA. I still remember my lost shipmates in VP-42 Crew 8 (P-2, off the Vietnam coast) and VP-50 Crew 13 (P5 off Corregidor Is., PI). I like to think they are at rest with Him now, and recall the good times we had back then. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers singing a "special" version of "From the Halls of Montezuma" in the dungaree bar at MCAS Iwakuni, Japan, Orange flight suits and Aussie bush hats in DaNang, Z'ing everything in sight, playing "king of the wing" on P5's in Cam Ranh Bay until we discovered sea snakes, the sounds of grenades at night on the seaplane tenders, and any other war stories of those great years we spent together in the VP Navy - what a ride it was!..." Memorial Picture "...BENNETT, CAPTAIN Art...This message is to inform friends and squadron mates of the death of CAPT Art Bennett, USN (Ret.). Captain Bennett served with VP-49 (late ‘50s early 60's) and VP-4 (early 60's). Don Richardson, a USNA classmate of Art's, is sending the information to the USNA group. I would be grateful to any recipients for passing this information on to others who are not email users and for informing others who served with Art in VP-42 or other commands not noted above. I was informed in a phone call from his only remaining child, Lynn Bennett-Campbell, who works for the World Bank and is living in Katmandu, Nepal, of Art's death in the early hours of Wednesday, December 8, following hospitalization on December 7 relating to an accidental fall while putting up pictures in his condo in Marquette, Michigan. The preliminary death notice in The Mining Journal in Marquette http://www.miningjournal.net/obit/story/128202004_obt02-o1208.asp reads: Arthur Bennett, Jr. - MARQUETTE Arthur Bennett Jr., 83, of 205 Lakeshore Blvd., and Conway Lake, passed away early this morning at Marquette General Hospital. Services will be held at a later date. The Swanson- Lundquist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The funeral home handling arrangements has a website at http://www.swanson-lundquist.com/. The schedule and obituary (when posted) can be viewed at: http://www.swanson-lundquist.com/ASIMAS/swanson/service.jsp?domain_id=140. A guest book where you can leave messages for Art's daughter Lynn and his companion of several years, Marion Sonderegger is at: http://www.swanson-lundquist.com/ASIMAS/swanson/guestbook.jsp?domain_id=140&deceased_id=34051. Marion Sonderegger's address is: 7 Middle Island Point, Marquette, MI. 49855. As I understand it, following a memorial service in Marquette that is yet to be announced, Art will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) with his son, King who died years ago in an aircraft carrier accident. Because of the waiting period for military funerals at ANC, I'm told that the burial service could take a month or longer. I will post to this list again with any further information I have on the subject. Regards, Rick Barry...John Larson johnlar1@cox.net..." [14DEC2004]

Bergstrom who served in the Philippines with VP-22 during those hectic first days of the war and also with VP-42 in the Aleutians. I would like to hear from any one who served with him and any stories they may have. I just received his military records and was suprised to learn that he was recommended for the Navy Cross for his actions during June 1942. He died in 1967 when I was eleven years old so there was not a lot of oral history passed on. I rememeber him telling me that his crew was "jumped" by a bunch of "zeros" while in the Philippines and just barley escaped by going into the clouds. He said there were a couple of hundred bullet holes in the plane so that when they landed in a fresh water lake the plane sank and that the radiomans head gear was shot off. While we are devastated by our loss, we also celebrate the fact that Harvey lived his life to the fullest, a point of which I'm sure you would all agree. Ninety pounds of radio that, on a good day with the trailing wire all the way out might put out 50 Watts! (One had to remember to wind that thing in, before landing... those 6 pounds of lead on the end could do some damage, and I don't know if I should repeat here some of the stories I've heard). Deployed to NS Sangley Point, Philippines. (I think the CO was CDR Tolleson, not sure). Went to A & B schools in NAS Memphis, Tennessee, then assigned to NAS Kodiak, Alaska, finally to NAS North Island, San Diego, California where I stayed in VP-42 until discharged early in 1960. Went back to school, then to work for NASA. Now semi-retired in Phoenix. Would like to hear from people who were in the squadron at the same time I was. In NAS Kodiak, Alaska I flew Radio Operator on R5D's and UF's. Freight and SAR. There was a P2V ("two turnin' and two burnin'") Squadron there at the time, but I couldn't transfer into it. One ship from that squadron got shot down by the Russians in the mid '50s over the Bering Sea (well, they "said" that's where they were). NAS Kodiak, Alaska and all of the Territory of Alaska was a personal hell for me. Throw in NAS Adak, Alaska, Kiska, Shemya, Cold Bay, Afognak, Sitkinak, and all those god-forsaken rocks. Oh, and don't forget Attu! I have the utmost respect for those who served in those places without the opportunity to fly out like I had. I remember many plane parts laying out in the hangar on my introductory run through. I think Dale Armour, who went down in the 1967 loss in the Alaska area was a survivor of the 1964 incident. I had only been out of the Navy a few months when I read about the 1967 incident and noticed Dale's name and felt that he had told me he was one of the survivors of the 1964 incident. Dale used to keep a large 4 engine airplane model he had constructed from scratch on the top of his locker that he had worked on for a few years. He had tremendous talent and also a very special spirit that set him apart from the average person. I've wondered since that time just what it was spiritually that he had found. Perhaps if one of his family reads this you would be so kind as to let me know. Thanks for all he and the others did for our freedom. It's a precious freedom. MANNING, LCDR Richard (Dick) B. Retired rb.mann@fidalgo.net "...My first tour in VP was with VP-42 from March 1962 until January 1965 at NAS North Island, San Diego, California. I was one of the first TACCO's in the Squadron and in the Navy as well. I first flew in P5M's and then transitioned to P2's. Was assigned to Crew-8 but was substituting for another TACCO when Crew-8, BUNO: 131513 crashed in the South China Sea (SEE: In Memorial for lost friends September 8th, 1964). We lost 4 men from our crew and a passenger. The aircraft impacted the water while on a night rigging run. After a tour at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington as a Radar Watch Officer, I was assigned to VP-2 from August 1968 to October 1969. VP-2 made the last WestPac deployment of P2's and set new records for performance that were ever made by a P2 Squadron CanDo VP-2, Second to None. Worst part of my VP experience was that I'm still trying to put 10 lbs into a 5 lb. bag. Retired from VP-69 in the Reserves in 1977 and so far have beaten the longevity odds. The VP Navy is the best even if we did have to fly 13 hr. hops. Be sure to get a copy of Brian McGuniess's book "Coffee On the Wing Beam". Lots of great memory joggers. Since I got online a couple of years ago, I've been looking to find info on my father's service in the Aleutians in the summer of 1942. What I've come up with so far is that he was with either VP-41 or VP-42. I started the search after he passed away. I found a photo album with pictures of Catalinas and crew members with inscriptions such as Umnak Island August 1942, Kiska bound, cooking on Mount Ballyhoo Uune of 1942, and pictures of Spence, Dow, Young, Rierson, Carpenter, Strickland and Ried. These last I believe were a PBY5A aircrew. Are any of you people out there? I'd love to hear from you. His name was Jack McKnight. I know he started out as a fireman with the beaching crew in Astoria, Or and ended up as an engine mechanic (AD) and by April 1943. It had been my burning desire to be on a flight crew since my very early months in the Navy and I had recieved the necessary security clearance and had completed SERE training while in VP-31. And then after completing all the quals to be told that AM's weren't permitted to fly in VP-42 was a disappointment to say the least. But I didn't take no as and answer and kept making unofficial inquiries. Then after about 6 months LCDR Sarkisian, the MO and PPC of crew RB 8 put me on his crew as 2nd mech. I was flipped out. But then in Dec I unexpectedly got orders to a VA squadron in NAS Lemoore, California. I'm 60 now and have only one other time worked with such a great crew. We put in the water, sewer and storm drain pipelines at the beginning of the population explosion in the Bakersfield area 15 years later. Wish I could find out if the rest of the crew are as lucky as I have been (not counting my 10 year job at Walmart). Do any of you 1964 Crew 7 VP-42 Alumni have a finger to type with? - Last week I again saw the faces of the VP-42 squadron guys on our WesPac Cruise in 1964. Seademons - Nickname for the 12 crews of VP-42. Forty years later I find the value I've placed on those experiences and times to be immeasureable. I also find that the names of most are missing from my memory and I want them, by golly. As I looked at the faces of Gary, Lou, Hank, "Jamie" (most liked) and the rest of our Crew 7 members I knew I would not stop trying to get the squadron roster for us from July 1964 to February 1967. I can imagine that some of you other VP guys have felt the same and know how and/or where to submit my request, or if it is not possible. Perhaps the faces will be the only available triggers for the greatest memories we will ever have. If Anybody anywhere knows the gouge, please Email me ASAP/at your convience. NAS Iwakuni, Japan for a short stay, then an overnight abrupt flt. to NS Sangley Point, Philippines when the Gulf of Tonkin incident came down. VP-42 had a great bunch of guys that were at top morale. Patrols So. China Sea began and I recall one crew picked up 5 Russian subs in one day. I'd like to hear from anyone with info re the following: Was it true that a VP-42 P2V was vectored or strayed near Russ. to draw fire from suspected SAM sites, and returned home with a missile fragment in an engine nacelle?-as I heard, the pilot, copilot, nav. plus were flown back to DC for a meeting with the Joint Chiefs-and due to having secret info. were not to fly this area again. next: Unfortunately, VP-42 lost a P2 on a night flt. while on (I believe) Yankee Station under control of USS Columbus, who ordered the P2 to identify a freighter by flying low enough to read the name on the transom-this resulted in catching a wingtip ,a crash, and loss as I recall of five lives. Seven survived with no signif. injuries One of the losses was a USN Captain riding along as an observer. Interestingly was that the USS Maddox and USS C. Turner Joy picked up our crew. My question is did the following hearing/inquiry result in the early return of the squadron to NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. I thoroughly enjoyed my yrs. of service with the USN. Where was the ADF Station located? They were just starting the station when I left Attu to go back to the States. What were the minimums on the approach plate and how far out could you pick up the signal? I understand that ADF Homer gave the pilots some safety when making it back to Attu. In September 1960 several of us were assigned to ferry a newly equipped P5 to NS Sangley Point, Philippines for use by sister squadron VP-40. We returned to NAS North Island, San Diego, California but not without incident. During a takeoff run at NAS Midway Island, we hit something in the water that rupture the hull directly below the electronic compartment. We managed to get the airplane proberly beached before it sank. We were at NAS Midway Island the month of November 1960 fixing the plane for further transport to the bone yard in San Diego. My final assignment was Crew 8 which received one of the last SP5's Martin ever produced I think it was 147947 and was a real gem. From there he went to VP-31 Training School till 1969 ( NAS North Island, San Diego, California), VP-42 ( NAS Whidbey Island, Washington) from 1969-70, then to VC-3 (Imperial Beach) until his discharge, after I was born in 1971. He was a AE3 when he left, and I know he was part of at least two classified deports to the Phillipines, because they were short people of his skillmanship (during VP-42). I also know when he first got to VP-42 they were already on a mission, I believe the Phillipines, so he worked in the AMD for awhile. According to him he remembers a Gerald Hanson (sp?), and a Powers (?), I believe they were both AE's also. I know Dad worked on P2 Neptune's, P-3 Orion's, and on the C-130 Cargo planes. Dad had a fire at the house in January 2000, and lost all but on small snapshot of his Naval pictures. I would love to get some visual reminders of that time back for him, but I need help. After I got out, I went with Pan Am as cockpit crew (B707) for a few years, during which time I flew in the Reserves in P2V-7s at NAS Floyd Bennett Field, New York and NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, until they threw me out. My old "fleet" P2 (BUNO: 145916) showed up in my Reserve Squadron. Later, I had the bittersweet pleasure of flying it to the boneyard in Arizona. After Pan Am, flew corporate for a very short time. Scared the boss...he'd never had a NAVY pilot before! Then worked in management for ONA (Overseas National Airlines) and later Seaboard World Airlines. All out of JFK. Finally about 1982, I went with the FAA (ATC) at JFK Tower and ISP AFSS. Eventually, I ended up in FAA management, Air Traffic Division, at FAA Eastern Region HQ at JFK. Retired to Southeast Florida at end of 2002. It's been great reading through all the entries on this site. I remember many of you folks from VP-42 during our time.
