UPDATE "...As one of the original 12 pilots assigned to the outfit that eventually became VQ-1, I flew the first P4M-1 built (BuNo 121451) after it was modified to the first P4M-1Q. After receiving our four planes from the Martin factory in Middle River, Maryland, and initial shakedown at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland, we completed operational training at NAS Miramar, as VC-11 Special Project Unit. On 10/16/51 we became the Special Project Division of the Air Operations Department of NS Sangley Point, Philippines. The picture Jay posted to VPNavy is P4M-1Q Buno 124366. BuNo 124366 began production at the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft factory in Middle River, Maryland, in 01/50 and was accepted by the Navy 07/26/50. It was assigned to VP-21 07/31/50 at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland, and was given squadron markings as HC-5. VP-21s eight P4M-1s operated in the Mediterranean and in Europe between 08/51 and 01/52. Between 02/17/53 and 09/02/54, 124366 underwent conversion to a P4M-1Q (Version 2) at NARF Norfolk, Virginia. On 03/23/54 it was back on active duty assigned to VW-1 Det A at NS Sangley Point, Philippines (on 05/13/53 the Special Project Division mentioned above became VW-1 Det A). VW-1 Det A became VW-3 Det A on 06/01/54 and finally VQ-1 on 06/01/55. BuNo 124366 was given squadron markings as PR-6. On 09/01/55 VQ-1 moved to NAS Iwakuni, Japan. Approximately 01/01/60 VQ-1 moved to NAS Atsugi, Japan. BuNo 124366 was stricken from the list of Navy aircraft on approximately 05/15/60 and scrapped at NAS Atsugi, Japan. The aircraft had accumulated 4,626 hours of flight time in its career...LT Mel Davidow Retired meldavidow@earthlink.net..." [07JUL2001]

VP-93 P2 Thumbnail "...The attached photo's are of LH-3 Buno 141242 at NAS Sigonella, Sicily in the Spring of 1968. Note the Ace/Jack squadron insignia, and the "E" on the nose. This particular crew (mine) was more adept at finding aircraft carriers in the Med than submarines, hence the three silhouettes...I made the longest flight of my 23 year naval aviation career in this aircraft: 18.2 hours. Someone wearing lots of gold braid decided that every patrol aircraft in the Med would go aloft on the same day at the same time (night, too!), cover an assigned area until PLE, and that would provide an operational snapshot (read: head count) from Gibralter to eastMED of Soviet activity. Debriefs being a lot more casual than what they eventually became, I have no idea whether the operation was a success, but I know that we packed 3710 gallons (bomb-bay tank) of 115/145 into that aircraft, and then leaned and reduced power so much you could damn near count the propeller blades....and you know, we didn't even place for endurance that night: at least one other crew landed at Sig after we did...NOTE: VP-21 had the tail markings "LH" for as long as it was in commission. VP-93 did not come into being until after VP-21 was decommissioned, and inherited the venerable tail markings. LH-3 in the photo was the inventoried property of VP-21 in 1968" Contributed by Roger A. The docket is stored in the (offline) NTSB Imaging System. Accident occurred Saturday, June 27, 1998 at RESERVE, NM. Aircraft:Lockheed SP-2H, registration: N14835. Injuries: 2 Fatal. The airplane had made a dry pass on the fire zone, then circled around to make a second pass and release its load of 2,450 gallons of retardant. According to witnesses, the airplane struck trees while in a nose low, right wing low attitude. Upon ground impact, the airplane exploded and burned. Investigation revealed no evidence of preimpact airframe, engine, propeller, or flight control failure/malfunction. The first officer, an initial attack trainee pilot, was in the left seat and the captain was in the right seat. Toxicology tests of the first officer indicated 0.031 ug/ml brompheniramine, 0.011 ug/ml chlorpheniramine in kidney fluid, and 0.142 brompheniramine, 0.072 chlorpheniramine in liver fluid. Both medications are over-the-counter antihistamines with sedative effects. The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident/incident as follows. Failure of the copilot to maintain both lateral and vertical clearance from the trees, and failure of the captain to provide adequate supervision of the flight.
