"...MIHANS, Andy Mihans "AJ"...I would like to sadly report the passing of "AJ" Andy Mihans. He and I went to A and B school together at Millington NAS in 1950-1951. We pulled a lot of fun liberties together. I called him today to tell him about my recent trip to Millington. It is not NAS any more. His wife told me about his passing away. His wife and I had a nice long conversation. I went to another school in NAS Norfolk, Virginia, and he went to a VQ squadron in NAS Norfolk, Virginia. I met him in NAS Norfolk, Virginia for the last time in 1951. I found him a few years ago and talked to him on the phone several times. I can kick my self for putting off getting together and now it is too late. I served with VP-7 from 1951-1954...Bud Michaels shirleybudvp7@aol.com..." [17JUL2005]

Reynolds High School - Class of 1926 - Naval Academy - Class of 1931 - Naval Aviator - Designated 1934 - CDR Miller Photo Album - Captain Miller took command of Bombing Squadron 109 in 1943 with the rank of Commander. Between December 31, 1943 and August 16, 1944, his planes sank 20 Japanese ships, probably sunk or damaged 46 other enemy surface craft as well as destroying installations and aircraft on many South Pacific Islands. Some of the islands included Truk, Kwajalein, Puluwat, Saipan and Iwo Jima. He retired from the Pacific war zone with several letters of congratulations including one from Admiral Chester Nimitz, Commander- in-Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet: "It is enough to say that the enemy will be glad you have left the forward area. Congratulations on an outstanding tour of combat duty. Well done." Commander Miller, Naval Aviator 4050, was decorated more times than any other aviator in the Navy. Navy Cross (second only to the Medal of Honor), Silver Star (third highest award), 6 Distinguished Flying Crosses, 6 Air Medals, Purple Heart, Two Letters of Commendation from the Secretary of the Navy and Admiral Nimitz, Presidential Unit Citation VB-109, American Defense Service Medal - Fleet Clasp, American Area Compaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, and World War II Victory Medal. "...MILLER, AMM2 Leo Patrick "Pat"...My Father, Leo Patrick Miller, served during WWII (August 6, 1941 - November 1, 1945) in the Pacific. Dad passed away October 8, 2007. Daddy didn't really talk much about his experience in the Pacific. He told us about a close call that happened while he was on a ship traveling with a fleet. A ship in front of his, and the one directly behind, each suffered hits while Daddy's ship (in the middle of the two) narrowly escaped being hit. I wish I had asked my Father more questions about it. If anyone remember's my Dad - I would love to hear from you..." Contributed by Rosemary Machen rmachen@jmdlaw.com [BIO Updated 10AUG2010 | 06AUG2010]

Squadrons that deployed to NAS Adak, Alaska at that time were VP-47 and I beleive VP-17. Left NAS Adak, Alaska and went to AD school in TN. Received orders to VP-31 and was stationed there from 81-84 working in the mech shop, until an injury forced me to leave the Navy earlier than I had planned. Would love hearing from Shipmates that served with me at NAS Adak, Alaska. Had the best of times when stationed there, will never forget them..." [24MAY99]

MICHAELS, AL3 Maurice (Bud) shirleybudvp7@aol.com "...I served with VP-7 1951 - 1954. Our crew was crew 11 out of NAS Iwakuni, Japan in 1953. Our pilot was LT(jg) Volmer, Plane Captain was Moore, 2nd Mech was Bill Scherbon (who I am still in contact with), 1st Radioman was Rosalis and I was the 2nd Radioman. I think our crew flew the last mission of the Korean war on 27 July 1953. I would love to contact any squadron mates from that period of time. In those days most of us went to NAS Millington, Tennessee for A and B school. Three weeks ago I visited Millington with my wife who I met while going to A and B schools there, and my son and daughter in law. The base is not Navy any more. It was closed about half dozen years ago I was told. The water tower that used to have the rotating green lights is still there. The small hanger that we took some classes in is still there. At that time, 1950, it housed an Avenger and a few fighters, I thank Hellcats. They were used to show us how to take the radios out and to safety wire them in. The hanger now is being used for a great project. Volunteers have disassembled the famous Memphis Bell B-17 flying fortress and are restoring it. They are doing a beautiful job. They are giving very interesting tours of all aspects of their work and B-17 air craft. They are trying to raise money to finish their project. After seeing their good work it would have been hard not to drop money in the bottle they were using to make the collection. The base hospital is now part of the Shelby county Jail system. My daughter was born in that base hospital in 1953 while we, VP-7, were in Japan at the end of the Korean War. I took my first plane ride while there in 1950. The plane was a PBY-5A Catalina. My buddy, Andy Mihans and I did not have enough money to go to town one Sunday and we took a walk around the base. Some reservist were were running the engine on the Catalina. We walked up and asked for a ride, a ride I will never forget, even after flying in P2V for 3 years..." [E-Mail/BIO Updated 09JUL2005 | 27FEB2002]
