Note VQ-2 NoticeNote

Note NOTICE: "...I'm trying to get in contact with Don C. East IRT the VQ-1 and VQ-2 History Circa 1951 - 1987 History Summary Pages. I'm trying to identify some folks in a picture that I believe was taken at the same CoC ceremony he has posted on the website. I've attached the two photos however the one from the website is not as clear as I had hoped. If I could get any information about where his original came from it may help me find out more about mine. Thanks in advance..." Contributed by Vincent Hadus vincent.hadus@navy.mil [11SEP2012]

Note NOTICE: "...On Thursday, September 1, VQ-2 will celebrate fifty years of commissioned service. A Certificate of Recognition of those years of dangerous, selfless and unrecognized service has been delivered to NAS Whidbey Island, Washington for presentation to the squadron in the names of us living Plankowners who were "present at the creation" in NAF Port Lyautey, Morocco, a half-century ago. By coincidence or plan, the squadron is scheduled to complete its move Stateside on that date, ending a significant and historic tenure on foreign soil. The effort to locate and contact the "Planks" has been going on for almost four years, and as it completes (finally!). I would like to thank VPNAVY patrons, as well as Clint Epley and Allan Privette of the VQ Association for their help and encouragement in the project...John McIntyre vqplank@columbus.rr.com..." Note NOTICE: "...I have been going over and over in my mind how to write this message. I don't want to find that in 3 months I can no longer write or call any of you so I am writing now. As a few of you may know I have been under treatment for Non-Hodgkins lymphoma for over 5 years. About a year ago the cancer changed to chronic lymphocytic leukemia. I am now requiring blood transfusions once a week and my oncologist told me yesterday that I will need transfusions twice a week shortly. As the cancer progresses I would eventually need daily transfusions at which point hospice may be the best choice. A few years ago when I started working on a book about the P4M Martin Mercator I had planned to visit different parts of the United States to interview those of you who had any contact with the P4M. Unfortunately cardiac and cancer problems kept me from doing this in recent years and now I know I will not be completing this as originally planned. However, my wife, Toby, wants to continue gathering your stories after I'm gone and may be contacting some of you about this. The time period from January 1951 to September 1953 was the high point of my Navy career. When I was selected as one of the original 12 pilots to form the first dedicated electronic reconnaissance unit in the Pacific fleet I had no idea of the significance of our mission. The work done by the Special Project Unit, the NAF Patrol Unit, VW-1 Det Able, VW-2 Det Able and VW-3 Det Able led to the establishment of VQ-1 and VQ-2 and a long and illustrious history of VQ. I am proud to have been one of the original members of this effort and to have served with the most dedicated group of Shipmates that I have ever known. God bless you all...Mel Davidow meldavidow@earthlink.net..." [22JUL2005]

Note NOTICE: "...As many people already know, I've spent the last couple of years trying to round up the Plankowners of VQ-1 and VQ-2 so that we can commemorate the fiftieth anniversaries of the two squadrons next year. Incident to this effort, I've located and communicated with several dozen old timers, and my P4M novel The Last Boomerang has smoked out several more who were not Plankowners but who were in the squadrons during the P4M days. As many of you also know, I've had a particular affection for the old P4M-1Q and as a function of having been in VQ-2 just shy of four full years, I'm told that I have more drive time in that aircraft than anyone, certainly more time than anyone now alive. (There has never been an aircraft like it. I was privileged to command the first P-3C squadron in 1969 and superlative as that machine was - and is - there were features of the old bird that were so far ahead of its time as to show up even the P-3C.) There may be as many as forty Naval Aviators, about a half-dozen ECM Evaluators and at least sixty crewmen still alive who operated and maintained the magnificent P4M-1Q at one time in the fifties, and I'm wondering if any of them - you - are interested in communicating with one another. We're not spring chickens any more, but an e-mail now and then from an old buddy never killed anybody. Drop me a line sometime and if there's a response, I'll try to keep everybody informed of the effort and perhaps trade P4M stories and e-mail addresses. John McIntyre (VW2A '55, VQ-2 '55 through '58)...John McIntyre vqplank@columbus.rr.com..." [26SEP2004]

Note NOTICE: "...I am trying to locate Paula Avery. We were stationed togather at NAS Moffett Field, California. The last I knew was that she was in VQ-2 in around 1987. Any info on how to reach Paula would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!...Vince (Vinnie) McGrath vin_mann1@hotmail.com..." [13MAR2004]

Note NOTICE: "...Attention any P4M-1Q folks, either VQ-1 or VQ-2, who were "present at the creation" as Plankowners...we're still a bit short of a complete list of the living plankowners, although the presentations for the fiftieth anniversaries next year in your names are in the design phase now. We've "lost" VQ-2 David Kouns - the e-mail we have won't work - and several other people whose original e-mail addresses aren't working, so if you get to read this, get in touch again so we can update you. No reunion, travel, or inconvenience on anybody's part will be involved. Royalties from P4M-1Q novel of the Cold War "The Last Boomerang" are covering the costs...John McIntyre (VW-2W/VQ-2 1955-1958) vqplank@columbus.rr.com..." [03AUG2004]

Note NOTICE: "...As most folks know by now the NSA has released some voice tapes recorded by VQ-2's EC-121M BUNO: 135757 (JQ-14) on June 8, 1967 - flying overhead the USS Liberty. Information, including Hebrew recordings and English translation transcripts at: http://www.nsa.gov/docs/efoia/released/liberty.html. Bamford - "Body of Secrets" (intentional attack) and Cristol - "The Liberty Incident" (fog of war) will be facing off on CNN's Wolf Blitzer Reports this coming Sunday July 13, 2003. One issue to be raised is whether voice tapes of the Israeli Air Force jet pilots and Israeli Navy torpedo boat skippers exist and remain classified. The NSA released tapes are only of the IAF helicopter pilots, sent to check on survivors after the attack, and their command controllers...Chuck Huber cerebralhush@gmail.com..." [11JUL2003]

Note NOTICE: "...I was one of the 12 original naval aviators that, in January 1951, received orders that resulted in our establishing the Special Project Division of the Air Operations Department of NS Sangley Point, Philippines in October 1951 flying the Martin P4M-1Q Mercator. In 1955 this unit became VQ-1. I am researching the P4M and request any help in locating the names of the plank owners of the Special Project Division, the NAF Patrol Unit, Naval Air Facility Port Lyautey Morocco, VQ-1, and VQ-2...DAVIDOW, LT Mel Retired meldavidow@aol.com..."
