VP CrewCREWs: VP-42 Crew ThumbnailCameraVP-42 Crew 1 "...1959 Cruise VP-42 CREW 1 - Everyone looking at all the references to BAMBOO BOMBER would like to know how that evolved. Here is the real story related to me by one of my crewmates. It seems Crew one made a normal takeoff from the sealane and climbed to a safe altitude to retract the flaps and jettison the spent jato bottles. It was reported that one or both bottles crashed into an active fish trap and destroyed it. The owner was really mad and there were some legal actions taken against the US NAVY. I've asked Jack to fill in the blanks but haven't heard from him yet. Anyone reading this is welcome to embelish if desired. A bunch of us did get out of the PI with our hides still attached - 1959 Deployment to NS Sangley Point, Philippines..." Contributed by SATTERLEE, AT2 Mark M. msatterlee6@msn.com [15JAN2008]

UPDATE "...Just got some more information on my dads "total eclipse of the sun" photo which is in the VP-42 crew photos section. I got a hold of a photographer who is in the photo. He is Willard Olney and was a photographers mate with the wing. He is the one with the camera kneeling on the right. Next to him is Charlie DeVed (the one responsible for the flight). Squeaky Anderson is to the left of my dad (he is the rotund one and was the commander of the YP "Yippy" boats). Ensign White (photo officer) is second from the rear. The rest are referred to as Squeaky's drinking buddies. It seems they did get a few photos of the eclipse, but due to the cold the shutters froze up quickly. It started as a scientific expedition and ended up as a party at 10,000 feet. Thank god my dad brought them all back, safe and sound..." Contributed by LT Edward W. UPDATE "...The photo of my father (LT. Edward Bergstrom) and crew was a photographic mission of the total eclipse of the sun, February 7, 1943. According to Peter Ffolliott in his book, What your daddy did during the war, "...We circled the NAS Kodiak, Alaska area until we were above the clouds-around 12,000 feet. The sun was bright and in full view. Soon the dark edge of the moon began to cast its shadow...The total eclipse was a remarkable scene with the eerie, cold blue light reflecting on the snow-covered mountains below us. All of a sudden the voice of a P-40 Air Force pilot flying out the chain to Adak called out on the radio, it seemed like everyone was listening. "What TIME is it?" he urgently asked. Poor fellow was unaware of the eclipse, and thought he was mixed up on the time and was going to have to make a night landing, which was not done on Adak at that time." Peter was the AO for VP-42 and a great friend of my dad. His book is a very interesting reflection on that time in the war. My dad was in NAS Kodiak, Alaska awaiting some kind of change of duty so he apparently had some time on his hands. Peter Ffolliott is second to the left of my dad (he has a mustache). I am not sure if the other crew members are part of VP-42. Thanks ..." Contributed by LT Edward W. Bergstrom [Deceased] c/o His Son Bob Bergstrom pbybergstrom@comcast.net [30JUN2001]
