Note VP-19 NoticeNote

Note NOTICE: "...I am doing some research for a possible book. I am looking for any information on when VP-19 and VP-50 first started receiving women in the squadron maintenance and aircrew. While I was in VP-31 I was the CNAP P-3C IFT Evaluator and I gave a checkride to a young lady. I believe it was either 1979 or 1980 she was in VP-19. Also when did VP-31 start using dedicated observers for pilot training flights. I believe there were three females who qualified for the observer position around 1979. Jennifer, Marti, and Christy. They attended Deep Water Environmental Survival Training (DWEST) with the XO CDR Howard I believe..." Contributed by KUSMIERZ, CWO4 Richard T. Retired kusi555@hotmail.com [28MAR2023]

LT(jg) Douglas R. Smith was a Naval Aviator assigned to VP-19 at NAS Moffett Field, California in 1968 with deployments to NAS Iwakuni, Japan, NS Sangley Point, Philippines, U-Tapao Royal Thailand Air Force Base, Thailand and NAF Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam.

In November 1968, LT(jg) Smith disappeared and has not been seen or heard from since.

I am trying to locate anyone who may have worked with him and am hoping you could point me in the right direction or may have some ideas on how to find people who may have known him.

Thank you for your time.

Best Regards,
Officer Kirsten Roberts, #77
Mountain View Police Department

Note NOTICE: "...I am attempting to locate anyone who may have known and served with LCDR Rodney Max Chapmen. We believe he flew with VP-19 (1960-1962) at NAS Moffett Field, California. He was lost while a member of VAH-10, Carrier Air Wing 21 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Coral Sea (CVA-43). On February 18, 1969, he was the pilot of a Tanker Aircraft (KA-3B) on a refueling mission. His aircraft was running low on fuel and he tried to make it back to the USS Coral Sea (CVA-43) but the plane fell into the ocean. His remains were not recovered. I am assisting his daughter Audrey in reconstructing Rod's VP experience. Rod and I were instructor pilots at NAS Whiting Field, Milton, Florida (1962-1965). Thanks for your assistance..." He was an Aviation Ordnanceman. I have to PROVE that he got off the plane in Vietnam when with VP-19. John died on June 4, 2015 of Ischemic Heart Disease caused by Agent Orange. It is listed on his Death Certificate as Ischemic Heart Disease, but still fighting this claim after more than 10 years. Can anyone help?..." Note NOTICE: "...When my father, AWC Joe Cruz Jr., was alive he submitted a package to the VA for compensation for Agent Orange, I believe. He was denied because he didnt have proof he was in Vietnam so the VA sent back his paperwork. Later I found his Original TAD orders that placed him (VP-19) and crew list at NAF Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam on 12AUG70, 1720 to 14AUG70, 0633. By the time I found these orders my father wasnt interested in repackaging the VA paperwork and never resubmitted. These orders I believe may be the needle in the haystack for some of the members on this list attached to the TAD Orders to receive some VA benefits in relation to Vietnam. I hope there are some of you out there I can help..." Contributed by Mike Cruz cruzter672020@yahoo.com [12FEB2011]

Norman Currier

Norman Currier This is my dad, Norman Theodore Currier, called "TED" or "Shorty" in the blister. He was a Tailgunner/Radioman who flew up and down the CA coast during WW2, but claims he never saw any action. At least one of the planes he was in "went in the drink," killing the pilot.
Norman Currier This photo I have says "Shorty standing on the bow, trying to hook on to a buoy on Eagle Mountain Lake, Fort Worth, Texas, October 27, 1944." Note the other PBY in the background? THIS should help narrow down the possibilities.
Norman Currier Here's dad in the tunnel? The Tail Hatch gunnery position?
I'd really like to know more about his Navy experience, if you can help me, PLEASE!!!. Contributed by M. Michael Pizar mpizar@vol.com [05AUG99]
