Reynolds, who was in excellent condition, died of an apparent heart attack early Saturday after jogging from his home a half-mile away to visit his children, said his ex-wife, Susan Reynolds. His last post before retiring in November 2004 was as commanding officer of Navy Recruiting District San Antonio. He currently was working with an independent government contractor as an intelligence analyst. Offered work in Washington, D.C., Reynolds turned it down because the family had set roots in San Antonio since arriving five years ago, Susan Reynolds said. "We had moved around so many times that after Kevin retired, we decided to stay here because it's such a great family town," she said. A football and rugby player in college, Reynolds coached basketball, baseball, soccer and flag football. He'd been a volunteer coach at the Mays Family YMCA for several years. "Kevin really believed that team sports was the best way to learn about being a team player and participating in a team," Susan Reynolds said. Though Reynolds was devoted to family, work and sports, he also put in time as a hospice volunteer, Susan Reynolds said. "That was important to him, too," she said. Born in Washington, D.C., he was one of eight children. REEDY, ADR3 Enrico ereedy@austin.rr.com "...I served with VU-3 (11/1961-11/1962) and VT-28. I joined VU-3 right out of boot camp in November 1961. Squadron had just moved from NAAS Brown Field, Chula Vista. After doing mess duty for 3 months, I was assigned to targets working on KDB-1 drones. Had a 4 cylinder Mcculloch 2 cycle 0-80cc engine. We also flew the beech 6 cylinder drone at Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center California. Target practice for their Hawk missiles. This drone had a turbo charger and could go upwards of 35k feet. VU-3 maintained a crew aboard two drone flying ships in NAS North Island, San Diego, California. USS Kalmia (ATA-184) and USS Targeteer (YV-3) provided drone services for ships in the San Diego Long Beach area. Worked on the drones on these two ships for about 3 months in 1963. While working on the Kalmia in 1963, we had a drone that flew a record 120 minutes. Had a fouled plug. Normal flight time was about 80 minutes. Made the McCulloch Company publication in Los Angeles. At that time, the DASH platform was being tested at San Clemente. I signed up as a 2 year reservist. Made 3rd class (ADR-3) in 18 months and extended for an additional year. Made two short cruises supporting drone services to ships going WestPac (USS Los Angeles (CA-135) (10/1962). After a week in Yokosuka, jumped on the next ship going back. We never flew going back, took the northern route. Everybody wanted to get home. Rode a typhoon for a week Uss Topeka (CLG-8). Just played pinochle. Second cruise (10/1963) flew drones from the USS Walke (DD-723). Love that tin can Navy. No uniform of the day at 1600, just played guitars and sang. on the starboard side. Still remember Bosun Mate Stone from the Walke. All great shipmates. We were airdales, but they treated us like ship’s company. Returned on the USS Hancock (CV-19) Ended up in VT-28 pulling checks on STFs at NAS Corpus Christi, Texas in February 1964. Got discharged in August 1964 Should have stayed in, but family issues at home dictated that I get out and help. Hindsight is 20/20. Was eligible to take the ADR2 exam. OH well. As I recall, I reported to the duty office to pick up my box lunch about 0430 and was told that instead of a "RADIO/OBSERVER" FAM, the flight was rescheduled for a "Pilot Trainer". We, about 7 or 8 of us (can't remember the number for sure), had been bumped from that flight to attend a GSE class. Upon returning to the classroom (about 10:00 a.m.) from a smoke break, the instrutor said "you all were supposed to be on RP7, weren't you? It just crashed - every one was killed". I believe, again not really sure, that Dwane Yoder (went to VP-40 "Radio Operator") was also origianlly schedule to be on that FAM flight. I went on to VP-19. They had a flag sticking out the smoke removal hatch the previous day. Must have forgotten to secure it; VP-19 NAS Iwakuni, Japan - Nose gear colapsed on landing (both nose tires blew on a night take off) The crew had to wait for daylight to confirm that both tires blew. CO suggested that the crew bail out before doing a foam landing. The crew's COMMENTS "*7#@^%" could be heard on the maintenance control radio in the back ground. They did eat all of their "unprepareds" (breakfast/lunch/dinner and most likely all the PBJ) while burning off fuel; and VP-6 NAS Cubi Point, Philippines "DITCH" (AT2 Carver and I were standing at the top a P-3 boarding ladder) watched them make the turn to Grandy Island. Saw them impact the water. Couldn't believe that there were survivors. I got to fly with CDR Montgomery when he was a reserve with VP-69. REYNOLDS, AT2 Joe E. jreynold@usit.net "...I served with FASRON-104 starting about September 1959 until the squadron was disestablished. We then became the Aircraft Maintenance Department at NS Rota, Spain. I departed NS Rota, Spain in March 1962 for discharge so I was there approximately 30 months. I cannot remember if FASRON-104 disestablished in 1960 or 1961, but it seems that the disestablishment ceremony took place during the summer months. I think the last FASRON-104 CO was Commander Reed. I remember that he was a pleasant pipe smoking fellow and enjoyed flying the squadron R4D's. FASRON-104 shared the big hangar with VQ-2 and we maintained AT, AE, AD, AM, AO, & PR shops which were used by the deployed VP squadrons. VA and VF squadrons visiting NS Rota, Spain also used these spaces. VQ-2 maintained their own spaces, but occasionally used ours. There was always an active duty VP squadron at NS Rota, Spain and occasionally a reserve VP squadron would do their two weeks active duty here. FASRON maintained a pool of aircraft (mostly A4D & F8U) that could replace planes that might be lost by the sixth fleet carrier squadrons. FASRON-104 had two R4D,s and three SNB's that were used by us and also others who might have use for them. When the sixth fleet was in port at Marseilles or Barcelona, we always sent an SNB up there for their use. During the time that I was there, I remember seeing the following Navy plane types on the flight line: P2V-5F and P2V-7, P4M, WV-2, A3D, A3D-2Q, A4D, AD-6, AD-5Q, F3H, F8U, F4D, FJ-3, R4D, R5D, SNB, and occasional Air Force transient planes C-119, C-124, F-101, F-102 & F-104. The first F4H and A3J planes that visited NS Rota, Spain was probably in 1960 or 1961 and these were in route back to the states after having been shown at the Paris Air Show. Most of the people that I remember worked in either the AT or AE shops. Some of the persons that I remember are AT2 Pedro Rodriquez, AT1 Harold Pasour, AQ1 George Bagshaw, AT3 Richard Kimmet, AE3 Stokes, AE3 McArdle, AT1 Troy Allen, ATC Nagorski, AE3 Forrest McKenzie, AKAN Robert Carpenter, AE3 A. A. Rende, AK3 Richard Jenkins, MR2 R. Sanford, AT3 Gonzales, LT Ray, LT Hansen, and several other faces that I cannot remember their names. I remember witnessing, along with several others, a spectacular crash of an F8U. I think that it was from VF-94 (maybe VF-74?) and they were imitating the Blue Angels. This F8U was flying at low altitude inverted over the runway and for some reason he nosed directly into the runway.
