Memorial Picture "...GIDDINGS, Robert Gene...Grey Knights fly shipmate to final resting place - By Lt.j.g. Evan Larsen - Grey Knights reporter - Friday, August 3, 2007 - Retired Chief Aviation Structural Mechanic Robert Gene Giddings took his last flight in a MPRA aircraft in June. His shipmates knew him as a decorated flight engineer who accumulated numerous flight hours flying patrol aircraft during the Vietnam era. During his tour of duty, he was decorated with an unprecedented 50 Strike-Flight air medals and the Vietnam Air Gallantry Cross. Giddings passed away April 26 and the VP-46 Grey Knights Combat Aircrew 12 had the privilege of escorting the chief to his final resting place. As his ashes were placed into the aircraft's freefall chute, the somber crew displayed an American flag and rendered a final salute to honor their fallen comrade. Giddings' widow Janice and their children had one last opportunity to say goodbye to their loved one. As the P-3 Orion carrying their loved one out to sea flew over Rocky Point Park, the family waved farewell to their husband and father. After the flight, Janice Giddings was given a condolence letter from Cmdr. Rex L. Curtin, commanding officer, VP-46, the flag that was rendered during the ceremony, as well as a framed chart marking the exact location of her husband's final resting place..." GIPSON, AK Kenneth R. neptun19@comcast.net "...I was an Aviation Storekeeper Striker with VP-19 from August 1962 to 1963 stationed at NAS Alameda, California. I was on TAD duty to NAS Moffett Field, California when we received our first P-3. It was actually called a P-3V-1 for a short time. I was later transferred to VP-90 at NAS Glenview, Illinois after serving three years on the Chief of Naval Reserve Staff in NAS New Orleans, Louisiana. I was assigned to VP-90 from 1979 to 1981 as head of Material Control. I always enjoyed my years in the VP Squadrons. I was an Airman (AK) called up from NAS Dallas, Texas. I was assigned to VP-872 at NAS Alameda, California and was with the squadron during all of the nuclear test in the pacific. While at Christmas Island, I was assigned to the flight line crew and worked long hours while the aircrews were racking up all of those flight hours. I remember fondly those months on Christmas Island and Johnson Island. I remember the trips to Por London to visit the British Navy Base and their version of ships stores. Also enjoyed their club. After my tour with VP-872, I served another 19 years in the Navy, retiring in 1984. I can say without a doubt, I think of those days with VP-872 more than any other tour in my career. I still have a patch and photos of the flight line at Christmas Island as well a s a well worn purple ball cap with white letters VP-872. I am currently employed with Lockheed Martin in Fort Worth Texas, responsible for all flight test support for the F-22 at Edwards Air Force Base. I make it out to California often and would like to attend a reunion. I also am currently designing a radio control model of the P2V-5FS and will finish it in the paint scheme of "Bean Stalk 1".
