August 2001

Greetings Fellow Lions

Well it is another year and we have to start thinking about the next VP-90 reunion. Our reunion committee has returned from a pre-cruise deployment to Memphis last week and it looks like we are set for another fun weekend with our fellow squadron mates.

1) Here is the tentative "Plan of the Day" for the weekend. It will commence at 1800 hours on Friday 22nd March 2002. The first event will be an all you can eat Catfish fry at a VFW near the base at Memphis, which is in Millington, TN. The base is northeast of Memphis about 15 minutes. The cost will be approximately $10.00.

2) Then on Sat the 23rd of March there are many activities planned. First is Day Break Golf (first tee time). There is an 18 hole golf course right on base. It is called Glen Eagle Golf. The charge is $35.00 with a cart. If you want to do that please make your own arrangements, call 901-874-5168 to make reservations. The next event will be a Graceland Platinum tour, it will be at 0900. It is about 3 hours long. The group rate is $15.00/person for 15 or more people. You will need to provide your own transportation. The last event planned is a trip to a casino in Mississippi. It is about 40 minutes from Memphis. The casino will provide a bus to our group(35 or more people). The bus will leave at 1100 and return at 1700. So Saturday is packed with alot of things to do.

The big dinner will be that night. The social hour begins at 1800 at the Helmsman Club on base. We will have our own room, the Tennessee Room. The Beal Street Buffet will start at 1900. The cost is approximately $20.00. There will be a cash bar. There will be a business meeting following the dinner. After that Ron Leis will be doing his auction again at the reunion. It will be not as long as previous reunions(running out of the good stuff to sell).

3) On Sunday the 24th will be the Champagne Brunch at 1000. It will also be at the Helmsman Club. The cost is approximately $10.00.

So that is the plan for the weekend. If you are coming please send me the money for the dinners. It is $10.00 for the catfish fry, $20.00 for the Sat dinner and $10.00 for the brunch; per person. If you are coming please fill out the form at the bottom of this message with the number of people coming, the meals that will be attended and your planned activities on Sat. That way we can plan for the weekend on how many will be going to each event. We want to know by the 1st of the year. That will give the committee a couple of months to plan.

The room accommodations are as follows. The committee is recommending staying at the Navy Lodge or Navy Inn on base. The base is now called NSA (Naval Support Activity) MidSouth. There are regular rooms with full-size beds, microwave, coffee pot and fridge. The rate is $35.00. There are VIP suites with queen size beds and kitchenettes. That rate is $45.00. You can call 1-877-navyinn or 1-800-navy lodge to make reservations. The earliest you can call to make arrangements is Oct. But do call early.

There are civilian hotels in Millington: 1) Magnolia Inn 1-877-874-4340 2) Admiralty Inn 1-901-873-1000 3) Super 8. All are about $50.00.

So please send me the form at the bottom with all the appropriate info and you money to my address. The costs are approximate at this time. When we get the final count then we will know what the actual costs will be. Again let me know by 1 Jan 02 if you are coming. There is alot to do in the Memphis area, so you might want to consider coming down early to enjoy the area and not be rushed in trying to see everything.

I also received the following info from Butch Michaelson concerning the 2000 t-shirts that members ordered. Butch received them(3rd week of Aug) and will be sending them out in the next few weeks. There was trouble with the original person who was supposed to make them. Butch had to get a new supplier, which meant starting all over again. The t-shirts had all the squadron patches on the shirts. They were commemorating the 30 years since the beginning of VP-90.

We want to thank the reunion committee for doing the 2002 reunion. Ron Leis, Skinny Brown, Butch Michaelson, Gene Kolker and Curt Hanson.

See you in Memphis in March 2002. These events are always fun to go to. It is the time when people will want to listen to your sea stories!!
