Terada was a fire-fighter who rushed to the crash site. Bodies were recovered, wrapped in parachutes, and later covered by flowers. After the crash, locals built a gravestone, but it was overgrown. Terada's father, a miner, before his death, wanted to collect fund, and build a monument. After more than 50 donors, stone monument built in 2009.

Katherine's father was co-pilot Donald Richardson. She was four months old, and did not remember meeting her father. Two years ago, from Internet, she learnt about monument. This year, she came to Japan for first time.

UPDATE "......"According to "The Fighting Flying Boat: A History of the Martin PBM Mariner," by Richard A Hoffman, Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, Maryland, 2004, VP-892 aircraft SE-2, which took off from Iwakuni on 8 Aug 1952 and crashed into a mountain in Shikoku had a BuNo of 87842 (pg. 97, pg. 226). The book also states: "It was vectored into a mountain by radar ground control. Investigation revealed that a U.S. Air Force ground controller, unfamiliar with the extermely slow climb performance of a loaded Mariner, had assumed SE-2 had reached an altitude to clear the hills."

Japanese local people built a memorial (their own initiative/cost) at the site of a VP-892 PBM-5 crash, in rural Shikoku Island. The 60th anniversary of the event is this summer and, local people are hoping USN reps can attend a memorial service to be held on 05 AUG. Currently, RADM Dan Cloyd, Commander, U.S. Naval Forces, Japan and RDML Matthew Carter, Commander Patrol and Reconnaissance Force/Commander Fleet Air Force are planning to attend the ceremony and RADM Cloyd will deliver brief remarks.

A Japanese language website shows pictures of the monument. http://www.justmystage.com/home/sakaisekizai/ireihi.html..." Contributed by Jon Nylander jon.nylander@fe.navy.mil [13JUN2012]
