RENO 1998

The Peppermill Hotel and Casino, 1 mile south of downtown Reno, is the location of Reunion 1998, Oct. 2 - 3, celebrating the squadron's 50th recommissioning anniversary and the 70th anniversary of the original commissioning! This will be the largest VP-4 Reunion ever! Many thanks to the 155 VP-4 vets that have already contributed $3060 to the VP-4 Veterans Association Fund. Your voluntary contribution will ensure that future VP-4 Veterans Association events and reunions are adequately funded. Please use the Reunion Registration form enclosed to contribute if you have not done so already. This is the last general mailing, future Reno 1998 mailings will be only to those who register for Reno 1998. Mail your registration ASAP and save this newsletter for reference. A newly published P2V book is being offered at discount. Use the Reunion Registration form to order.

ROOM ACCOMMODATIONS

Room prices are $59/night. Bob Kessler in Hawaii (888-976-6237), FAX (808-923-6237), E-Mail (KTCtravel@juno.com) is handling all Peppermill Hotel arrangements plus any airline/car rental needs you may have. He has arranged discounts on United Airlines fares, call him for particulars. Contact him directly before 1 August to guarantee rooms at our reunion rate.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS

  • Friday Night: Social & Dinner...A Friday night social/dinner is planned at the Peppermill Hotel

  • Friday Morning: Carson City Mint/Mine Tour. Tour Nevada's Capitol, Carson City, the Nevada State Museum/US Mint, complete with a recreated underground mine exhibit, and the Nevada State Railway Museum. Scheduled for 9:30 AM to 2 PM.

  • Saturday Morning: Historic Virginia City Virginia City, the bastion of silver mining in Nevada, looks much as it did in the 1880's. Visit historic buildings and saloons and ride the original Virginia & Truckee steam train route to Gold Hill and return. Scheduled for 9:00 AM to 2 PM.

  • Saturday Night: Dinner & Dance Planned for Saturday night is a dinner dance at the Peppermill Hotel. Bring along your dancing shoes for a fun trip down memory lane!

  • Saturday Morning: Golf Extravaganza Bring your clubs and tee-off early Saturday for 18 holes at the Patron Four Golf Extravaganza. Remember the course at Naha??

    SOME DETAILS

    Volunteers: We will need "volunteers" to stand the VP-4 "Hospitality Suite" watch for Thursday through Saturday. Contact me if you can help out.

    Door Prizes: First Prize: Two Round Trip tickets (48 states), donated by Gordon Bethune, President, Continental Airlines (VP-4 71-74); P2 and P3 model kits, and more.

    Speakers: We have invited Capt.'s Tom Pollack and Dale Hilton, the 1947-50 Commanding Officers to speak at Saturday's Dinner.

    Memorabilia: We hope to have a large display of VP-4 "memorabilia" on display. Start collecting pictures, slides, movies, "what have you?" Make good copies and save the originals. Mail your items to me NOW!

    Aircraft: John Larson @ 612/456-9617 (in MN) has been working hard to get a PV/P2/P3 aircraft to Reno for us and we hope to get a P3C from VP-4, now stationed at MCAS Kaneohe Bay there also. Contact him if you have any ideas on display aircraft.

    Stage Shows: The Peppermill Hotel has Late Evening stage show entertainment. For stageshow entertainment at the downtown casinos, send me a self-addressed/stamped envelope and I'll send details on "what's happening" that week. Reservations and transportation (the Peppermill has a free shuttle bus to downtown) are on your own.
