 "...CAVANAUGH, John J. SR...John J. Cavanaugh Sr., 81, of Latrobe, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at IHS at Mt. View, Unity Township. He was born March 10, 1918, in West Newton, a son of the late John J. Sr. and Catherine McCarter Cavanaugh. He was a graduate of St. Vincent College, and a member of Holy Family Church, Latrobe, and its Ushers Club. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy as a first lieutenant pilot in VPB-25, where he saw action in the Philippines. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, three Air Medals and two Gold Stars. He was a member of the VFW, Latrobe. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Robert C. Cavanaugh. Survivors include his wife, with whom he shared 55 years of marriage, Mary M. McFadden Cavanaugh; two sons, John J. Cavanaugh Jr. and his wife, Suzi, of Latrobe and Dr. Michael F. Cavanaugh and his wife, Beth Anne, of Ambler; three daughters, Mary M. Jenison and her husband, Robert, of Wellsville, Kathryn A. Smith and her husband, Kenneth, of East Fallowfield and Anita L. Cavanaugh of Latrobe; four brothers, Emerson Cavanaugh and his wife, Myrna, of Latrobe, Daniel Cavanaugh of Herminie, Francis Cavanaugh of West Newton and Phillip Cavanaugh and his wife, Ruth, of South Carolina; and two sisters, Catherine Murphy of Monroeville and Winifred Kuhn of Morgantown, W.Va. Also survived by 16 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the JOHN J. LOPATICH FUNERAL HOME INC., 601 Weldon St., Latrobe. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Family Church. Interment St. Mary's Cemetery, Unity Township. "...IRWIN, Floyd "Don"...My grandfather, Floyd "Don" Irwin, was an aircrewman on PBM-5s. In a journal that I found, he said that his plane was called the Georgia Peach. He flew out of San Diego on 8 Oct 1945 and was in MCBH Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii until 8 Nov 1945. He served with VPB-100, VPB-205 and VPB-25. He also mentioned the names Cokus and Zimker in his journal. I've also been told that he had a monkey as a pet, and the monkey was sort of the mascot. If anyone has information, I'd love to know it. I've not had much luck finding information..." Dad was awarded the Pacific Theater Ribbon (2 Stars), American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, Victory Medal, Phillipines Liberation Ribon (1 Star), Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal and Gold Stars in lieu of a second and third Air Medal for execeptional service while flying in combat areas where the enemy had strong patrol defenses and effective anti-aircraft positions..." O'BRYAN, ATCS Bob "OB" Retired bashfulbobus@yahoo.com "...Joined the Navy in 1942. Boot Camp at Great Lakes, Mech School at Navy Pier and Gunnery School at Yellowwater. Stayed a spell as instructor then went to Flight School in 1943. Washed out in 1944 and went to Flight Engineer School. Went to NAS Tanapag Harbor, Saipan, Marianas Islands and Okinawa with VH-6, Operated off several AVs and AVPs out of Chimu Wan flying ASR. After the war went to Shanghai and flew courier around the area, Trans to VPB-25 when VH-6 went back for decom. Squadron moved to Yokohama in early 1946 and continued courier out of there. Back to MCAS/NAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii and NAS Alameda, California for VPB-25 decom in summer of 1946. Mustered out of reserve in TI and reenlisted in Regular Navy, taking a bust from 1st to 3rd in so doing. Went to VR-5 in Sand Point and NAS Adak, Alaska working on check crews, loading crews, gas crew and flight orderly. Went to Radio Tech school at NAS Corpus Christi, Texas and NAS Memphis, Tennessee then to an airgroup in Charleytown, RI in 1948. Went to AEW school at NAS Norfolk, Virginia then VX-1 and ZX-11 in NAS Boca Chica, Florida in 1949. Back to NAS Memphis, Tennessee to teach in AT School in 1951. Shipped over for VP-4 in NAS Whidbey Island, Washington in 1956. No more than checked in when we were moved to Okinawa. Rotated to VP-1 in NAS Whidbey Island, Washington in 1958. Went to R&T in Oppama and stayed until station decom in 1961. Back to TI to retire..." [28MAY2002]

Al1 VP-1 (P2V Neptune)during the Korean War and AT1/c plank owner in VR-742, NAS Jacksonville, Florida (C-54/C-118). Flew high priorty loads into Vietnam whoile on two weeks active duty early 1960's. Retired in May 1986 from Naval Air Reserve as AT-1 (E-6). Am now Public Relations I Director of the International B-24 (PB4Y-1/PB4Y-2) Memorial Museum section of the Pueblo Weisbrod Aircraft Museum, Pueblo, CO. Nelson, LTjg D. L. Stephens, A. C. Revier, E. C. Sisco, E. A. Sorbin, D. J. Scheunemann, P. S. Knickerbocker, A. S. Hopkins, W. H. Wall, W. M. Zumbrun, and L. H. Davis. He also lists flying with LT Burek, LTjg White, LT Coston, LT Crocker, LCDR Skorz, LT Stevenson, Ens Nelson, Ens Stephens, Ens Toman, LCDR Screws, LTjg Wood, and LT Peters. SCOFIELD, AO3 Robert W. c/o His Son Ken Scofield PaigeLane@aol.com "...I am trying to verify my father's location in all this: Robert W. Scofield, AO3/c. His discharge papers list two squadrons: VPB-99 and VPB-25. As I read the history accounts in the Dictionary of Naval Aviation Squadrons, it would seem he started in VPB-25 around October 1944. He talked about the daylight patrols in the Philippines that were so routine that he thought the Japanese would watch their clocks and then man their AA guns just before the planes flew over. I have some photos of planes and tenders. I also have a crew photo showing three officers (pilots?) named Crane, Vallade & Reed. The photo also shows six enlisted named Sandberg, Simmons, Zisa, Scofield, Hadaway, & Wilpert. The back of the photo says "UNIT FAW-20(?)." What can I do further to establish a better connection?
