If you remember the story I did in Scuttlebutt recently about Operation Highjump in the Antarctica and the role of PBM's, there is more information now. This all happened 50 years ago and finally the details of the crash of one of the PBM's has gained some well earned publicity. The crew members who survived, spent thirteen days baffling winds of up to 150 knots and hiked over ice as thick as the Rockies are tall. It is a story of human courage and endurance seldom matched. James Robbins, one of the survivors recently wrote me to tell me that in addition to a picture of the crash scene by noted aviation artist Stan Stokes, there is a proposal to issue a Postal Stamp commemorating the incident. If you know the details of this story you would agree that it is an honor well earned.
