ALLEN, Joe W. jallen78@bellsouth.net "...I began my Naval career in June, 1955. My first VP tour was with VP-31 San Diego, CA as a student Radioman in the P5M Marlin. Next came VP-47, NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. We made a deployment to NS Sangley Point, Philippines 1964 - 1965. This was truly an exciting tour. Remember Marie "T"s, Sonny's and San Miguel beer. I was sidetracked for 1965-1968 by Instructor Duty with NAMTRAGRU Det 1015 NAS Lemoore, California. I was one of the original new rate "AW"s changing from ATC to AWC in 1968. Soon after I received orders to VP-19 NAS Moffett Field, California. This was the beginning of a very colorful and rewarding career. I served in VP-19 from 1968-1975 with deployments to NAS Adak, Alaska; NAS Iwakuni, Japan; NAS Cubi Point, Philippines; Naha, Okinawa; NAS Cubi Point, Philippines again with detachments to NSF Diego Garcia and Utapao, Thailand. VP-30 NAS Jacksonville, Florida 1975-1978; VP-8 NAS Brunswick, Maine 1978-1981; FASOTRAGRULANT Det. NAS Brunswick, Maine 1981-1984, rounded out my Navy career. I retired in 1984 and returned to my home state of LA. Great career, too many unforgetable Shipmates to mention and a lifetime of great memories I wouldn't trade for anything..." [12JAN2000]
ALLISON, AMM Robert S. (Bob) c/o His Daughter Katy Allison texas64@netscape.net "...My father, AMM Robert S. (Bob) Allison, served in VP-19 (VPB-19) from 1942 to 1946. I have a photo of his crew taken at NAS Alameda, California in 1943 that includes my father and LT(jg) A.L. Macauley, ENS N.H. McDade, as well as others identified only by last names: Baxter, Jenson, Sunquist, Mullens, Scribner, Clark, Widener, and Mizenko; will try to post this photo. I also have my father's Aviators Flight Log Book listing nearly 150 flights from March 1944 to July 1945, mostly in the PBM-3D. Patrols appear to be mostly from Eniwetok and Saipan and include missions over then-Japanese held Wake and Ponape islands, and in March 1945 over Chichi Jima and to within 100 miles of the Japanese coast. VPB-19 won a Unit Citation for operating from an open roadstead off Iwo Jima in March 1945, and the first use of JATO in a combat area. We also have an address from the Captain of USS Hamlin (AV-15) dated 18 Feb 45 (the day before the landings at Iwo). The Hamlin, in conjuction with Seaplane Tenders USS Chincoteague (AVP-24) and USS Williamson (AVP-15) (Picture), was to establish a seadrome, which would then be occupied by planes of VPB-19 and VH-2 flown up from Saipan. The Captain said "We are fortunate in having assigned to us for this operation an excellent squadron, VPB-19. They have a fine reputation and are raring to go." Although my father passed away in 1993, I am interested in any additional info on the wartime exploits of VPB-19, and also in hearing from any VPB-19 veterans from that era or their families..." ANDREWS, Ross randrew1@midsouth.rr.com "...VP-19 was my first assignment after "AX(A)" school at NAS Memphis, Tennessee. I arrived at NAS Moffett Field, California in August 1962, as the squadron was just transitioning to P-3 aircraft. I served as an aircrewman for 2-1/2 years and made the big deployment to NAS Adak, Alaska in 1964/1965. Many fond memories of all of the personnel I served with, and all the places we went. (Japan, Hawaii, Alaska, Australia and the many Cross Country flights we made in the US) After 20 years of Naval Service, have to say that this first tour was by far the "best" and most enjoyable, even with the rigors of deployments. Later served in VP-31 and VP-46, along with a couple of instructor tours at NATTC NAS Memphis, Tennessee. Would like to hear from anyone I served with and/or knew from my Navy days..." [20MAY2004]

Spent time in NAS Iwakuni, Japan, NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii, NAS Adak, Alaska, NAS Coco Solo, Panama, Canal Zone. During the the Cubian Missle crisis, our crew was sent to NAS Norfolk, Virginia. They took 6 crews from the Pacific Fleet and 6 from the Atlantic Fleet. They combined us together (all P2V-Neptunes) and called us "Task Group Delta." (I have a patch around here somewhere). We went prowling along the Cuban coast and came up with a strange reading on our gear. Our crew, believe it was VP-19 Crew 1 at the time, made the first contact and readouts of the first Russian Nucelar submarine. It was in the newspapers approx. 6 months later. This was when the Pentagon and Rickover were saying the soviets were 2+ years behind us. Also, VP-19 changed over to the P-3A's during this time. We made two NAF Misawa, Japan and one NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan deployment during my time in the squadron. I served with the best Chiefs and AWs in the fleet while in VP-47! In January 1980 I transferred to VS-41, then on to FASOTRAGRUPAC NASNI, and finally NMPC Det NAS Dallas, Texas. I retired 31 Dec 1986. CASTRO, AOC Albert Retired aacastro@juno.com "...After my initial P-3 training with VP-31 Moffett Field, California, in March of 1971 I started my first VP operational tour as an Aircrew Ordnanceman with VP-4 NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii. I remember Sherald Juneau the Flight Engineer who became like a brother to me. The fellow Ordies Bob McCoy, Andy "Ord" Anderson, Bob McKinney, Vic Teem, Bill Maye, Glen Schleusser, Howell Robins, Charles Roberson, and of course the two brothers Jim and Rob Jenkins. Pilots like Jim Messegee, Skip Dale, and Bill Broadwell, who cared. Never forget the Cocos Island departing flyby. Everything was just Hunky-Dori. The deployments, detachments, and visits to Japan, Taiwan, Diego Garcia, Australia, Guam, Wake, Philippine Islands, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam are memories burnt into my mind. Never to forget Wichita Det. After five years with the Skinny Dragons I transferred in April of 1976 to shore duty. I had to get back into flight status. So in July of 1978 I transferred into VP-19 Moffett Field, California. I remember the Ordies most of all Randy Corman, Duck Carter, Reno Dickson, Johnny King, Steve Harris, Frank Pesich, and Perry Veto. Drivers like Ray Morris and Don Hefkin both of them pretty boys. I visited a number locations including, Adak, Okinawa, Singapore, Korea, and Iran. Made a number of site revisits, including back to Hawaii for those quarterly torpedo qualifications. Of course we always had to have a full Ordie load team on all those Hawaii flights. After four and a half years with Big Red, and thinking I had enough of West Pac in January of 1983 I transferred to the Naval Air Development Center (NADC), Warminster, Pennsylvania. I remember Bob Flangan, Dale Cain ("Best Man"), and an Ordie named Ron Jerasa. My aircrew shore duty at NADC had me deploying to NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada, NAS Bermuda, and the Virgin Islands. In November of 1985 I reported to Oceanographic Development Squadron Eight (VXN-8) at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. During my duty with VXN-8 the World Travelers there was Barry (Hank) Evitts, JD Patterson, Tim Mattson, and Bill Lomba, who I remember most as I was stationed with all four in prior commands (repeat offenders). The civilians Jeff Kerling (Admiral Kerlingus), and Pete Kupstas (Stinky Pete) hit the beach with the rest of us. Then there were the Flight Engineers that no one could ever forget Ed Matteson, Greg Valdez, and Jimmy Danials. What a bunch of great guys, and there was many more, I just had to name a few. While assigned to the World Travelers I made detachments to England, Iceland, Greenland, Portugal, Norway, Scotland, and Spain. After 17 years as a Naval Aircrewman, in December 1989, I reported for my final tour in the Navy with the Naval Aviation Maintenance Office at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. I retired from the United States Navy in April of 1992. Currently I am providing direct staff technical support to the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIRSYSCOM) Program Manager for Aviation Training Systems (PMA205), for acquisition and life cycle support of airborne weapons systems. Living in La Plata, Maryland and working in the Patuxent River area, I get to see a few of the old P-3 squadron mates..." [E-Mail Updated 09AUG2005 | 27MAR2001]

CRANDALL, LCDR Woodruff "Woody" M. Retired wcrandall@adaptivemethods.com "...I served with VP-22 from 1969 to 1972 as an AWN (my wife says I still Glow in the Dark sometimes!). Great experiences with deployments to NS Sangley Point, Philippines and NAF Naha, Okinawa, Japan with Detachments to U-Tapao Royal Thailand Air Force Base, Thailand and NAF Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. I left the Navy to finish College and returned via AOCS in 1975. After all the "Fun & Games" at AOCS I served with VT-10 ("FO" school), VT-29 (Loved those Convairs!!), VP-31 and arrived at VP-1 in 1977 for a deployment to NAS Cubi Point, Philippines and a wonderful Detachment to NAS Agana, Guam. In 1980 headed East to VP-30 as NFO Instructor and Naval Weapons Test Squadron (WST) Czar. 1983 saw me disappear into the Strange World of NMPC Sea Duty Component Det Dallas where my mind was "altered" and fingerprints erased (only kidding-I think). When released from confinement in 1985 had my pay back tour in DC in OP-13. Escaped to NAS Moffett Field, California in 1987 for re-programming at VP-31 then assigned to VP-19 for my DH tour. I had a blast on our NAF Misawa, Japan deployment thanks to the Soviets and Spring Ex 1989. It was amazing to see that many subs in one Op Area and that many P-3s fighting for rights to be ONTOP. We needed an Air Traffic Controller to keep us out of each other's way! After that last great melee, I was shipped off to Armed Forces Staff College and then back to DC to baby sit the NATOPS and Air Tac-Man conferences and publications. Retired in late 1991 and began working for Summit Research Corporation (DOD Contractor) out of Gaithersburg, MD as a Program Manager and recently, Director of Corporate Development. After 8 great years there, moved around to various other contractors until joining Adaptive Methods, Inc in 2003 as a Program Manager for NAVSEA IWS 5 SSQ-89 programs and several others. Currently, serving as Corporate Facility Security Officer and Operations Manager overseeing our 5 office locations across the East Coast. Browsing through the other entries has been a trip into the past and makes me realize just how much I miss the Squadron environment, hard work and fun we all had. Would love to hear from more of my former Shipmates and try to track down some buddies that have vanished. I'm still trying to find that "Bucket of Prop Wash" AWC Gary Dunlap sent me searching for that first week I reported to VP-22! I've reconnected with a number of my VP-22 Shipmates from the 1968 to 1972 era. We live in Northern Virginia, just West of DC. DAVIS, Jesse C. jcdavis@tcac.net "...I started my VP career in VP-6 when AEWBarRonPac decomissioned in late 1964. Actually I went directly from BARRONPAC to VP-31 for F/E training prior to checking into VP-6. Myself and ADR1 R. C. Miller were the first P-3 F/Es in VP-6. We brought Buno 150525 back to NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii, that was our first P-3. I can remember the P2 crewmen climbing out of their aircraft sweating profusely, while we were in air conditioned comfort in the P-3s. I believe that at that time VP-6 was the last VP to fly the P2V-5F aircraft. Any how it was full speed ahead to get ready for a 6 month deployment to NAS Adak, Alaska. We did it and did it well. I left VP-6 in 1967 , went to VR-30 at NAS Alameda, California for one year and then to VP-31 as CNAP F/E evaluator. After a good tour there, I went to VP-19. I joined them in NAS Iwakuni, Japan, in 1971 and left VP-19 in 1977. What a hoot, that was the best squadron in the Navy at that time, at least I think it was. We had a fantastic maintenance department and the CPOs were great. I have many fond memories of VP-19. Would especially like to find out what ever became of AWC Joe Allen. I see so many old Shipmates names in the VP-31 Shipmates listing, many of these were just young petty officers when I was in VP-31 and VP-19, many F/Es that I gave check rides to also. My last VP was in VP-47, it too was a very good squadron. I joined them in NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan in 1978 and retired in 1980. Finished up with 26 years as AFCM. Would like to hear from any who served with me..." [02MAY99]

I received the attached email from Linda Embach last night, regarding AWC Chuck Embach's sudden death Thursday October 18, 2007. I know we've always considered Chuck to be a good friend, valued Shipmate and bright spot in our memories of our VP-17. He always had a smile and cheerful words to share. If any of you don't exactly recall, AWC Chuck Embach worked in the Ops Dept and did his daily magic with our flight schedule during our '75-78 deployments.
