Memorial Picture "...HULL, AMR2 Walter G. Jr...ARM2 Walter G. Hull, Jr. joined the Navy in March 1942 and became an aviation radioman. By chance, he was assigned to VS-47 where he joined his brother, ARM1 Warren E. Hull for 10 months of coastal patrol flying out of NAS Alameda, California and Crescent City, CA. When it came time to rotate out of VS-47 to a combat squadron, Walter requested and was transferred to VB-150, which was being formed in late 1943. Warren was also transferred to VB-150 and they remained together in VB-150 (and after December 1944, VPB-150) through work-ups, deployment to the Central Pacific, 55 combat missions against the Empire of Japan, and the squadron’s decommissioning in July 1945. During the deployment, Walter was part of Crew 12. On one mission, his plane was hit by anti-aircraft. Upon arriving home and after a month’s leave, training began anew. VPB-150 was reconstituted and shortly thereafter disbanded. My uncle, now certified as Combat Aircrewman, with the insignia to prove it, was transferred to VPB-198. He was being trained in the new PV-2 Harpoon for the invasion of Japan in the fall of 1945. Thankfully, the war ended in August. Walter was discharged in December 1945 at the age of 22. His involvement in the war ended in 1947 when he received official citations awarding him several Air Medals and and the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions when his plane was hit by enemy fire. He went on to have a successful career, marriage and five children. He was humbly proud of his service in VPB-150 and the small part he played in winning the war. Walter died at the age of 68 in 1992..."
