He entered the service on 9/4/43, and proceeded to the USS Coos Bay (AVP 25) directly from NTC in San Diego, CA. I too served in the Navy during the VietNam War, as a Search and Rescue Aircrewman with Helicoptor Combat Support Squadron One / Detachment Two. My father spoke rarely of the War, and I would like to know if someone could help in finding out when the USS Coos Bay (AVP 25) crossed the Equator during its Heroic tour of duty. I have an old Certificate that a "Shell Back" would receive when that tradition was accomplished, but it was never filled out. I crossed the Equator while I was attached to the USS MIDWAY, and I would like to have the dates that the USS Coos Bay (AVP 25) when my father was on board, and when I crossed be written into and authenticated by the Commanding Officer of NAS Corpus Christi, Texas. Paul retired from the US Navy after 26 years of service. He was an independent distributor for Home Interiors and Gifts and attended First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Newport News. Paul was a 1968 graduate of Newport News High School, attended Christopher Newport University, president of VP-68 Association, a member of the American Legion, and Fleet Reserve Association. Survivors include his wife, Janice T. Randolph; two daughters, Kimberly Maltos of San Antonio, Texas, and Ashleigh Randolph of the home; three sons, Kurt Taskey of Yorktown, James P. Randolph of Germany, and Troy Taskey of Yorktown; his mother, Shelley Randolph of Newport News; his father, Jim Randolph of Biloxi, Miss.; two sisters, Nancy Wilson of Yorktown and Sandra Miller of Yorktown; two brothers, James F. Randolph of Newport News and David A. "...RASSIEUR, REAR ADMIRAL William T...From a contemporary press report: May 22, 1993 - Rear Admiral William T. Rassieur, who left St. Louis as a teen-ager for a life at sea, died May 14, 1993, at the San Diego Hospice in San Diego, California. He was 93 and had lived in retirement in Rancho Santa Fe, California. After graduating from Cleveland High School in 1918, he joined the Navy as a radioman for service in World War I. He was among 600 enlisted sailors who took the Navy's test for Annapolis - and among 25 who passed. Admiral Rassieur graduated in 1923 and got his naval aviator's wings of gold in 1926. His first command was of VP-14 - a job he left to become executive officer of the seaplane tender USS Curtiss (AV-4) , at Pearl Harbor, just in time for the Japanese attack. For the rest of his life, Admiral Rassieur kept as a souvenir a piece from the propeller of the Japanese plane that crashed on the Curtis' deck. He wore two other souvenirs - the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was the first commanding officer of NAS Patuxent River, Maryland, where today the community center bears his name. In 1944, he got his wartime command at sea - the escort carrier Sargent Bay, which took part in the fighting at Saipan, Palau, the Philippines and Iwo Jima. Admiral Rassieur's postwar career alternated between special duty as a nuclear weapons expert and commands - of the attack carrier Kearsarge, of the Navy's Middle East Force and of the naval air stations in the Hawaiian Islands. Admiral Rassieur retired at Pearl Harbor in 1952 with two-star honors. In retirement, he painted (seascapes and sailing ships), played the piano (ragtime) and entertained his guests with sleight-of-hand. RADER, Rex Edward http://www.usna.com/history/classof1940/R.htm "..Rex came to the Naval Academy from Van Buren, Arkansas. After graduation, he reported to USS SARATOGA (CV-3) and began his career in ordnance and gunnery as a junior division officer in the main battery. In early 1941, he reported to USS NORTH CAROLINA, again in gunnery. He was assistant navigator for a day putting NORTH CAROLINA in commission, as Junior Officer of the Watch. In early April, 1942, he and Elizabeth Bartlett were married in Portland, Maine, just three days after the general order banning marriage for two years after graduation was rescinded. Rex's ship was soon off to the Pacific and, after the landing at Guadalcanal, when NORTH CAROLINA was torpedoed, Rex entered flight training in New Orleans. He received his wings in July, 1942. Rex helped fit out and commission VPB-21, a PBM patrol seaplane squadron. After deployment to South-Pacific, Rex was ordered to the Postgraduate School in Annapolis, under the sponsorship of BuOrd. He finished the course with the final year at MIT in 1947 with a Masters Degree in Aeronautics, and was designated AEDO. His BuAer assignments were primarily in research and development of aircraft armament and guided missiles, some ten years in all. After a most enjoyable and educational year at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Rex was assigned to the Intelligence Directorate of the Joint Staff as the Navy technical intelligence representative, in 1959. He spent the following three years, beginning in 1960, in Baltimore as the BuWeps Representative at the Westinghouse facility. The next assignment was at the NAS Patuxent River, Maryland, as the Senior Member of the Board of Inspection for aircraft, which was charged with determining the acceptability of naval aircraft for service use. Rex's last four years of active duty were spent in the Defense Intelligence Agency as Assistant Deputy Director and then as Deputy Director of Technical Intelligence. Rex had 17 years of Washington duty. Two years after retirement in 1971, Rex and Betty toured the United States for six months in a trailer recreational vehicle. They have four children and eight grandchildren. They bought a retirement home in Suffolk, Virginia, and have lived there since 1974. I was the Public Affairs Officer, and Assistant Training Officer and most proudly 3p, 2p and finally PPC of various crews. I started off with CAC-7 which unfortunately was involved in the midair off the coast of San Diego with CAC-2 (SEE: In Memorial for lost friends March 21st, 1991). As one of the newest members of the crew, I was being alternated in on various missions with different crews, and missed the fateful mission on that day. I often think of my lost comrades, and regret their passing. From VP-50, I was assigned to VP-47 where I served as PPC/MC on CAC-3 with the best crew a pilot could wish to have. In VP-47 I was initially assigned as First Lt. Div officer, then as Quality Assurance Division Officer. From there I instructed with VT-28, and finally with the Instructor Training Unit in Wing Four, NAS Corpus Christi, Texas. I have since separated from the Navy, and now fly the friendly skies with United Airlines as first officer on the 767/757 aircraft based in Los Angeles, Ca. The BRAC found out what a good time we were havin' while beating the pants off the other VP outfits and promptly shut us down! (my theory anyway). Only got to enjoy being a Lion for a year, but WHEW! Those memories will last a lifetime. Besides getting to design a T-shirt and patch for my fellow Lions ("the Hunt is over" patch, and the last VP-90 shirt), I got to paint a "neuvo Lion" patch on the hanger floor and did a pencil drawing of LX flying over a Delta. But my favorite task was being the VP-90 SLJPO! I still shudder when I think about Master Chief Stungis catching me in the passage way, "Come here Honey! I got a job for you!..." [21APR2003]

I particularly remember watching the two "deployment movies" (Bill & Ted and Raising Arizona) way too many times, trying to continue the legacy of the Big Red Band after Pat "the AxeMan" Reynolds left, standing Ready 1 with Kahuna on New Years' Eve 1991, and a little "combat action" in the Gulf! In the middle of the Decommissioning in 1991, I (briefly) went over to VP-47, until they figured out that they already had too many pilots! So, at the end of 1991, with all the "fun" pilot billets gone, I gave recruiting a shot (in my hometown of St. Louis). That experience taught me a few things: (1) that I was not really "in" to recruiting; (2) that No. 1 was most likely due to flying too much, finishing my BS [the perils of being a NAVCAD] at SIU, and having way too much fun; and (3) that I didn't want to end up living in my "hometown!" So, I departed the NAV in December of 1999, went to law school in Los Angeles (USC - Go Trojans!) from 1995-1998, and have been working as an attorney ever since. During the war he flew a PBM-5 with Crew 14, the PBM with E14 plastered on the side of the fuselage. But I couldn’t thank this page and those who contributed to it enough. Because of this page I’ve been able to find out who he served with, what plane he was in, and learn more about the units history.
