Memorial Picture Shipmate Pix "...MACK, Donald F...It is with a heavy heart that I share the news from our family of Don Mack's passing this morning. He fought the hard battle of cancer to his last breath to win the fight and ring the victory bell. Riordan and I were at his bedside watching him be at peace with his going knowing bells were being rung as he was piped above for his final tour. Friend, Husband, Father, Grandfather Don leaves behind a legacy of pride with his two children daughter Briana and her husband Ryan, son Riordan and three grandchildren Keelan, Declan and Ashlan - our leap year baby born on Feb 29th. His love of adventure and serving in the Navy around the world on the P3 platform as aircrew EWOP with VP-4, VP-30, VP-22, VQ-2 and VPU-1 from 1974-1994 giving him what he always said was the best job anyone could have. Following Navy retirement, Don worked for the USPS for 24 years before retiring this past November due to his cancer. Always involved with anything Disney, poker games, coin collecting, puzzles/codes/cyphers, traveling and for the last 18 months remodeling his home in Venice while going through chemotherapy. He wanted me tell all the stubborn males reading this and you know who you are to get a colonoscopy once you hit 60 or earlier. Don't put it off your family will thank you for it..." Memorial Picture Shipmate Pix "...MAZUR, Julius...Dad was a member of Naval Air Transport Service Command, Pacific Wing, Squadron VR-11, serving as a crewman onboard R5D aircraft and totaling 1,500 hours flight time from July 1945 to December 1945. The majority of flying took place in CENtral PACific (CENPAC) and WEStern PACific (WESPAC), with an occasional trip back to NAS Oakland, California. H is logbook entries indicated destinations such as Johnston Island, NAS Kwajalein, Marshall Islands, NAS Tanapag Harbor, Saipan, Marianas Islands, Manila, and NAS Agana, Guam with the return leg in reverse order back to Honolulu. After the Japanese surrender, his logbook entries indicated flights into Tokyo, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. Dad razzed me when I enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1973. However, that became good banter back and forth over the years with an occasional unexpected jab or indignity thrown into a conversation about the other’s branch of service. Dad passed away in September 2014 at the age of 89. I was just looking through Dad’s aviator’s logbook again and it occurred to me there is an indirect service connection between the two of us. In the Coast Guard I was an ET specializing in radio transmitter stations for LORAN A systems. LORAN A was state-of-the-art technology in the late stages of the war for long distance navigation. During my enlistment in the Coast Guard, I was stationed at a LORAN A station in Northern California which was part of the chain of stations up and down the West Coast. Navy pilots likely used that system when flying into and out of Oakland. I was then stationed in CENPAC on Tern Island in French Frigate Shoals located in the middle of the Hawaiian Archipelago. That station was paired with the LORAN A systems located on Kauai and Johnston Island. That LORAN A system, along with others, was also very likely used by the pilots flying with Dad and so many other crews as they journeyed across the vastness of the Pacific Ocean. With Best Regards to All Who Read This..." Contributed by John Mazur jmazuruscg@duck.com [30APR2023]

Duty in the boondocks; best and nearest liberty was Crisfield, Md. where one could at least get a decent seafood dinner. An office type, I served with the squadron as education yeoman, and flew as observer/nosegunner in the gunless front nose seat every chance I could get; generally with Lt(j.g.) McArdle in plane LC5 -- he from Detroit area and would often get required flight time in by flying to NAS Grosse ILE, Michigan on weekend trips when he was off. Made several ops flights, too -- including one crash landing at NAS Jacksonville, Florida. Many good officers in squadron then, including one who was killed in an aircraft crash in South America after he had transferred. I served with VP-8 until it relocated to NAS Norfolk, Virginia in late 1958 -- shortly thereafter, promoted to JO3 and transferred to USS Greenwich Bay (AVP-41). Still have many memories of the squadron and its people (including some home 8mm movies taken at NAS Chinco), standing frigid ramp watches trying to stay out of the snow and wind in the nosewheel wells, those horrible "box lunches" packed aboard for 8-hour patrol flights and all the rest of that fun stuff..." A hastily-constructed "target" of white coral was set-up on a plateau-like outcropping off the southern tip of the island in Magicienne Bay. After each run by the aircraft, my job was to descend from my position in a "Harp Shack", on the edge of the cliff, that was 100 yards distant from the target, and then climb to the top of the plateau, rearrange the destroyed coral and then back to my original position, etc. Apparently, because of the constant immersion in the surf and then continually working with coral rock, I developed severe jungle rot of hands and feet. Was air-evaced to Guam, then to Aiea Heights Naval Hospital, Hawaii and finally to Oak Knoll NH, California, for the next six smonths before discharge. Being an AME, there wasn't much difference in the aircraft systems, but I both enjoyed working and cussing the P2, because of what I considered the tight work space. I went on to work on A4's F4'2, F8's, and F14's, but always considered the propeller driven aircraft to be "real" airplanes, versus "vaccuum cleaners" I only got to ride in the P2 once, because I wasn't designated aircrew, but it was a good flight, from NAS Memphis, Tennessee to St. Louis to pick up some reserve aircrew, for their 2 weeks active duty. I was an ET2 stationed at Ground Electronics from December 1977-April of 1980. I left for another tour at sea aboard USS Barnstable County (LST-1197). Before my tour there was complete I got a Humanitarin transfer back to NAS Brunswick, Maine for the summer of 1983. My Dad had a stroke then a heart attack and my Mother had back surgery all within 3 months. It was a long summer. Leaving NAS Brunswick, Maine once more I reported to the USS Aylwin (FF-1081) to finish my interupted sea tour. While there I was promoted to CPO. Following my short tour there I was once again assigned to NAS Brunswick, Maine. This time I was the Maintenance Chief of the Ground electronics GEMD division. I served this tour from June of 1985 through December of 1988. Leaving NAS Brunswick, Maine for the third time I spent three years assigned to NAS Sigonella, Sicily. My duties ther included Physical Security Officer and Assistant CMS Custodian. I had planned on retiring following my tour there, but several surgeries put that on hold. My last surgery was at Naval Hospital Bethesda, MD. While waiting for my medical board I persuaded them to reassign me to NAS Brunswick, Maine. My medical hold lasted two years and two months. I finally retired on 30 April 1994 with 22 years of service. At my retirement ceremony the Base XO said, I'm a little jealous of a BLACK SHOE having 4 tours at NAS Brunswick, Maine." MANN, ADC Mark A. Retired mmann1@yahoo.com "...I joined VP-5 in April, 1972 as an ADJAN. VP-5 was on deployment to NAS Sigonella, Sicily at the time. I was first assigned the duties of Duty Driver. In those months, I met many of the aircrew when I delivered food, coffee, and water to the flights. That led me to riding along on a tactical flight one day and I thought that was the neatest thing since sliced bread. Then I heard about the second mech program and started lobbying to be allowed to enter that program. I was allowed and when the squadron next deployed to NS Rota, Spain / NAF Lajes, Azores, Portugal, I was there as a NATOPS qualified second mech. Another deployment back to NAS Sigonella, Sicily and then I was up for orders. Wanting to continue flying, I reported to VP-31 for FE school, where I finished #1 in my class. My next assignment was VP-6 at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii. From there, I went back to NAS Jacksonville, Florida and taught ground pounders at NAMTD1011. My next assignment was VP-30 FE refresher followed by VP-45. While at VP-45, my wife got really sick and I took a humanitarian transfer to NAS Jacksonville, Florida. Fortunately, she recovered quickly and I terminated my humanitarian status and reported to VP-16. When that tour ended, I reported to RTC Orlando and pushed boots for 3 years. After RTC, I went back west to VP-31 for another FE refresher course and on to VP-47. I retired from the Navy in 1993 and went to work for United Technologies Corporation's Pratt & Whitney Division and then on to their Hamilton Sunstrand (formerly Hamilton Standard) Division. They were on a sight-seeing trip over Japan and hit a mountain. In addition to the crew, an admiral and a captain were on board. The plane was not found for over two years. He did two tours in the SP with VPB-137 (second tour the CO was Porter). My dad's name is Robert Markham. In Aug 43 he co-piloted for Fred MacFarland (Big Mac). Mac had come from the Aleutians and had some combat flying experience. At this time they were in VPB-142. In Sep or Oct 43 they transfered to VPB-137, went to Walace Island and then Funifuti Island in the Ellice Island group. In dec 43 they moved to Tarowa in the Gilberts about one week after it was taken by the ground troups. They were relieved by VPB-142 in Jan 44, returning to Alameda in Feb 44. After leave, the squadron reformed (VPB-137) and trained in the San Waken Valley in CA. Good friends were Schaffer, Carlson, and Berkowitz. They were stationed near Patterson CA and Berkowitz married Sue Patterson while there. Aug 44 VPB-137 left the US to the Philippines. They went to the Admiralty Islands flying sub patrols around Manus Island around Nov 44, Moriti Island Dec 44 and then Tacloman on Leyte Gulf. My father and Berkowitz were the first two Navy officers into Clark Field. Here, Berkowitz drew a pencil sketch of my father, Robert Markham. We still enjoy this drawing. From Clark Field they flew patrols over the China coast and Formosa. Here he bombed an alcohol factory on formosa and flew cover for the USS Bullhead as she picked up a downed piolet. The Bullhead never returned according to my father. On a search I recently did, the Bullhead is listed as going down on Aug 6, 45 in the west end of Lombok Strait. VPB-137 returned to the states in July 45. I would be interested in learning more about VPB-137 and would like to hear from anyone who knows more about what I described above..." I had two great deployments ( NAS Bermuda/ NAS Keflavik, Iceland and NS Rota, Spain/ NAF Lajes, Azores, Portugal) and some great memories. I'm still in the Navy although not an AW, I'm an AC1 now, stationed an NAS Brunswick, Maine. I miss the flying and crew camaraderie. MARTIN, AO Charles A. pistonfvr@yahoo.com "...I served with VP-23 at NAS Brunswick, Maine from 1977 to 1980. I was an Aviation Ordnance Aircrewman & groundpounder. I miss my squadron and the people associated with the VP community. I miss the people that live in Brunswick, Bath, Lewiston, Lisbon, Lisbon Falls, Auburn and the entire state. Maine people are the nicest people I've ever met. While deployed to NS Rota, Spain (I believe in 1978), VP-23 had a plane go down. VP-26 lost one of theirs in the Canary Island mountains. And I guarded the wreckage of another squadrons planes (VP-8 or VP-10) when it crashed in Poland Springs, Maine. But the entire VP community, and the people of the state seemed to "ALL" get along like brother and sister, or as a family in whole. The dedication of the community of Brunswick, and the dedicated Naval Personnel of NAS Brunswick, Maine, were all exceptional and extradordinary. Friends of mine still today are; Kenny Newell, from Boonville, Missouri, now living in Aurora, MO. Nick Raccioppi, from North Babylon, NY., but had returned to Brunswick, ME. Mike Cavanaugh, from Utica, NY. Jerry Corbin, from Des Moines, IA., but has since moved to Tulsa, OK. And the beautiful lady I married in 1980, Susan Juliette Martin, from Lewiston, Maine, well, she died of cancer in 1982, and she is buried in Lewiston, ME. My heart is filled with wonderful memories of the days I was an enlisted Navy man. My heart is filled with Passion and joy for the VP Squadrons around the world. And I would like to say thanks for allowing me to be a member of the VP-23 Squadron, a Vetran of the United States Navy, and for the time allowed to live in the Great State of Maine..." Captain Moffet was our Commodore at the time. Other names I remember are LCDR John Vaughn (Admin Officer), YN3 Jim Nordyke, YN3 Don Robertson and PN3 Mumford. It was a great command for a 1st tour as the officers and chiefs were excellent role models for a 19 year old just out of boot camp. I finished active duty with a tour at NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba under the able leadership of EMC Bernard Jackson (who could fix anything electrical) from 1958 to 1959. MARTIN, David C. W8VB@aol.com "...Served in VP-5 from 1952-1954 as an AT3 to AT1. Stationed at NAS Jacksonville, Florida and deployed to Boca Chica and NAS Keflavik, Iceland. I flew Radar and Radio ECM. I was discharged from active duty in 1954 and served in VP-732 NAS Grosse ILE, Michigan till approximately 1964 or 1965. Have many good photos of NAS Jacksonville, Florida, NAS Keflavik, Iceland, and NAS Grosse ILE, Michigan. We were one of the first VP squadrons to move from Quonset huts to 3 story concrete barracks in 1953. While in NAS Keflavik, Iceland, in addition to patrol duty, we flew to Manchester England, Preswick Scotland, and a liberty week in Munich Germany. Coming back from Munich the whole crew, except three of us, were trashed from too much partying. As a result the Navigator flew as pilot. I Flew as copilot and the Plane Captain acted as Naviator. Consequently were got lost over Holland on our return trip. The rest of the crew remained sick till our return to NAS Keflavik, Iceland. I have lots of stories, names and photos of P2Vs over the Alps returning from Munich and in NAS Keflavik, Iceland. In our last months in NAS Keflavik, Iceland our barrack (designed to hold approx 300 Non Comm) had a rotating complent of 50 t0 100 live-in Icelandic girls most very lovely college students who found the free cigarettes, booze and food in the barracks a great attraction. Lot of free love prevailed. Most every room had three sailors and an Icelandic ROOMATE. The wind and was terrible for flying. Icelanders could roam on base which caused big problems with raids from the Icelanic police making the rounds of the barracks rounding up girls. Iceland men would sneak into P2Vs and steal any thing they could carry off since no fences. Wild times for a young AT2. Regards..." [26JUN2000]

In P2's, I was in the Avionics Shop and on Relief Crew as a Radio Operator and in P-3's I was in Crew 5 also as Radio Operator (ATN2 & AW2). After a slight break I affiliated with VP-91 as a Plank Owner at commissioning in October 1970 ( NAS Moffett Field, California). I have CAPT Bobbie Farrar to thank for this as he convinced me that I should over look my bad attitude toward the Navy as they were a good outfit. He was indeed right. I then became a JEZ Operator and eventually SS1/SS2 and NATOPS Evaluator for that seat position. I left VP-91 in May 1976. I still keep up with a lot of Shipmates from both squadrons. MARTINEZ, PH1 Roland Nino Retired martooony@aol.com "...I reported to VP-46 right out of NAS North Island, San Diego, California boot camp on 1 November 1956. Within three months the squadron was in NS Sangley Point, Philippines for a six month deployment. Although not sent to PH school, I was in the Education department until I passed the PH3 exam and then began flying in the South China Sea area doing what the Ordnanceman would usually do and that is to "rig ships and photograph the reefs". Greatest duty flying into Hong Kong Harbor in a PBoat; having a crew take the aircraft back to NS Sangley Point, Philippines and vacation for a week. Was on leave when 6Boat (SEE: In Memorial for lost friends December 9th, 1957) went down in NAS Corpus Christi, Texas around Christmas time 1957. I named my first son after Paul Faircloth, an AL2 from Florida, who was on board the aircraft. I made a second deployment where I met my wife-now of almost 50 years - in 1958. I departed VP-46 in March 1959 for Washington, DC. I did return to NS Sangley Point, Philippines, one more time and attached to Commander, Naval Forces, Philippines (COMNAVPHIL) from 1962 to 1965. Two sons Paul and Mark were born at the Navy Hospital NS Sangley Point, Philippines. Currently live in Chula Vista, Ca. I have many photos and negatives from the squadron days as well as some fine art done by our Vietnam artist and Historian here at our Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 472, Old Navy Chapel offices, below the old Navy Hospital in Balboa Park. The art is great and the artist is Richard Derosset, a fellow vet and member. I would like very much to put some of his PBoat work up on the site, one view with 6Boat being pulled from the water by a tractor, right about sunset. I also have and just purchased a commission of 12 PBoats, floating, flying, one being lifted aboard Salisbury Sound AV6 at an advanced base, probably near Taiwan somewhere, cannot recall. The scene is frpm a photo taken in April 1957, before the Sally went back to the States. I actually had a direct hand in producing two cruise books of VP46 with PH's Meadows, Waymire, Finney, and Goodwin. The PHs in the 58 cruise book were: Meadows and Goodwin. The two great officers John Wade and Ronald Oelhbeck were the producers of the book. I have two of them. Also have a lot of color slides of views around the PI, when we landed near Cebu and other places. Finally, I have one of the original concept drawings of the trident and mailed hand, designed by LT McLeod, I believe. I would ultimately like to donate it to your archive with the prints and negatives that I have of the old Martin Mariners. It was a great time and place for a nineteen year old to get his Navy career started that lasted another 18 years. Although the Navy PBoats are gone, it will always be a lasting and unique memory of another time where many photo imagescaptured this era, and sailor's lives some 54 years ago..." I trained, as did everybody I guess, with VP-31 at NAS Moffett Field, California and then moved to VP-46 across the runway. I caught up with the 46 when they were finishing a deployment in NAS Adak, Alaska, in April, 1971. After coming back to CA, we went on a 6-month deployment to Japan early '72 and came back about in August '72. My rate was AO3 and I flew with crew #7, commanded by LT Casey Coane, most of the time, since the Exec was actually the Plane Captain, but he didn't fly that much with us. We had some exciting times flying in the Sea of Japan and near S. Korea. Some of the scariest flying I ever did was through the Tishuma Straits, though the flying out of Adak was pretty hairy, too. Somedays we had to all be in the cockpit, as we taxied at NAS Adak, Alaska, because it was so windy we had trouble keeping the tail off the tarmac! I could go on and on, so I will stop. No duty sections, we kept our liberty cards in our pockets and as long as we showed up on time and did our work no one cared where we went or what we did. On completion of "A" school in the summer of 1954 I was assigned to the Naval Air Development Unit (NADU) at NAS South Weymouth, Massachusetts and remained there until the Spring of 1957. Dad passed on two years ago, but going through the site brought back many memories. I remember the crash on 11 May 1964 off NS Rota, Spain well. My mom's best friend was married to one of the crewmembers and it was my first real upclose and personal experience with death and loss. I'm now retired from the Army after 27 years and have the same feelings of comraderie with friends I served with, especially after combat duty. I'm glad my dad had that type of connection with the members of VP-7 and when he flew with Project TRIM and VAH-21..." [31DEC2002]

MAZY, Mike mikemazy@hotmail.com "...I spent 11 and one half years in the Navy, most of it with VP squadrons. I was stationed at NAS Moffett Field, California in Sunnyvale, California, first with VP-19 then transferred to VP-31 then back to VP-47. I left the service in 1974 as an AW-1. I served as a crewman on various flight crews and with VP-31 was also an Instructor training flight crews. I helped train the Australian Air Force when they purchased P-3's and saw when they lost one of their aircraft on landing at Moffett Field when one of the main landing gear broke off. It was determined later using metallurgical tests that the metal used to make that landing strut had crystallized and was defective. I was also in the VP-19 when they lost an airplane on an evening sub exercise south of Catalina Island. I was to take the place of one of the crewman who died in the crash however he showed up for his flight and went instead. I was also in the squadron when one of the flight crews was doing touch and go's and an Ames Research 707 was directed to land on the same runway and the 707 crashed into the underside of the P-3. The only survivor of that crash was a friend of mine named Bruce Malibert. He wasn't supposed to live. He sure fooled the doctors. Not only did he live, he came out of his coma and learned to talk again. He remained a paraplegic though. He was from San Bernardino, California. The last I heard is that he got married..."
