Dad served with VPB-208 as a Combat Air Crewman Aerial Gunner and Bombardier during World War II. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medals and battle stars for the Saipan, Iwo Jima and Okanowa campaigns. Dad participated in bombing raids, sea patrols and rescues of downed American flyers. They were part of the air group which flew over Tokio Harbor on September 2, 1945, while the Japanese signed the surrender agreement on the USS Missouri (BB-63). Memorial Picture "...KALIN, CAPTAIN Morris I. Retired...The first Commanding Officer of VQ-2, CAPT Morris I. Kalin, passed away on Christmas Day, December 25, 2006 of kidney failure complications. He was 91 years old and his heart was good and he was raring to go, but his kidney would just not hold out. He passed away in Northbrook, Illinois, where he had resided, with his wife Lillian, since his retirement from the Navy in 1965. After his Navy retirement he maintained a seat on the Board of Trade in Chicago for numerous years. Morrie joined the other living VQ-2 Plankowners in the dedication of a commemorative certificate on the occasion of the Squadron's 50th anniversary on September 1, 2005..." KAISER, AWCM Thomas III Retired tka107@aol.com "...I was priviledged to fly all positions on the "Pappa-Two-Victor-Five-Fox" with the reserve squadron, VP-731 at NAS Grosse ILE, Michigan in the late fifties and early sixties. A few of us took the classes at NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania and were checked out in all positions except Pilot. We decommissioned and flew our five birds to NAS Alameda, California and transitioned to S2F "Trackers". I left the Navy as an ADR in 1965 and returned in 1969 to S2E "Trackers" and was administratively switched to AW1. We had 136 aircrew at the new navy base at Selfrige Air National Guard Base, Mt Clemens, MI. and supported many Navy training evolutions that, according to the messages, could not occur without the Aircrew of SANG. In 1973 The Navy brought a Rresforon, CVSGR-70, VS73 to SANG and we went into the history books with "The Last of the Great Stoof Drivers" by delivering one of our aircraft to the Naval Air Museum, Pensacola, FL and another to the Yorktown Carrier Museum at Charlotte, NC. VS73 Transitioned to VP-93 in 1976 and I left the squadron (HYT) in 1990 and finished my naval career on March 8, 1998 with The Naval Intel Unit attached to the Michigan Air National Guard, SANG. We flew EA-1F(AD5Q Skyraiders). 12 flew EF-1G (AD5W, guppies). 12 was transferred to NAS Norfolk, Virginia and 33 got all 12's Ws. The result we had over 40 aircraft which at one time include an AD-5 or two. Interesting note I only served in two numerical squadrons. I started with VP-50, next sea duty, VAW-33, following sea duty was with VS-33 from where I was sent TAD to VRC-50. KASER, CAPTAIN Robert Dale Jr. http://www.marquette.edu/rotc/navy/command.htm "...Captain Dale Kaser was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and entered the Navy through the Aviation Reserve Officer Candidate Program after graduating from the University of Cincinnati in June 1974. Upon completion of naval flight training he was designated a naval aviator in September 1975. Initial operational tour was with VP-4 at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii. There he served as line division and NATOPS officer. In 1979 he reported for instructor duty to VT-31 in NAS Corpus Christi, Texas. In 1981 he received a Master of Arts degree with a management major from Webster University. In 1982 he reported aboard USS FORRESTAL (CV-59) as Assistant Navigator. Captain Kaser served as the Carrier Placement Officer assigned to the Naval Military Personnel Command and in November 1986 reported to VP-5 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida. During this tour he served as Training Officer and Maintenance Department Head. He was then assigned to CPW-11 as Training Officer and Assistant Operations Officer. Selected for operational command he served as Executive Officer of VP-44 until disestablished and Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of VP-26 at NAS Brunswick, Maine. Graduating from the Naval War College in 1994, he received a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies. He then reported to the Staff of Supreme Allied Commander, Europe in Casteau, Belgium where he served as the Section Coordinator for NATO Maritime Requirements. Additionally, from December 1995 to May 1996 he was temporarily assigned to the Implementation Forces (IFOR) in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina as the Joint Operation Center Shift Director. In July 1997 he reported to CINCPACFLT as Deputy Director for Operations. In August 2000 he became the Professor of Naval Science and Commanding Officer of the NROTC Unit at Marquette University. KATZ, Larry papakatz@sbcglobal.net "...Went to Pearl Harbor in June of 1941 and was assigned to VP-23 (the original squadron}. On Sept of 1941 I was transfered to VP-21. Both squadrons were located at NAS Ford Island. We flew PBY-3s until we got our new 5's. After Dec 7, 1941 when the Japs hit us, VP-22 left us to go to VP-101 in the Phillipines via Perth, Austrailia. In April of 42 our squadron left (VP-21) Pearl Harbor to join them. We got to Perth On April 8th,1942 pulling duty along the coast of Western Austrailia, up North to Java, Borneo, New Guinea, Port Moresby, Lae, Moroti Island in the Halmaharas,Woendi in the Biak Group, Los Negros in the Admiralties, Emirau in the New Ireland group, Green Island in the Solomons, Treasuaary Island in the Solomons, Oro Bay in New Guinea, Sepic River in New Guinea, Milne Bay in New Guinea, Rabaul Harbor, all this while Blackcating, and Dumbo, plus God knows what. Our Squadron spent nearly three years in the South Pacific all with VP-101. In October of 1944 we got our orders to return to the states. Our Squadron was then designated as VPB-29. By that time we were all ready to come back home, as our bunch went through the attack in Pearl Harbor, comming out of the Philippines and the rest of what all the squadrons went through. Through the efforts of the PBY Catalina International Association of which all PBY crewmen and Officers who flew the Catalinas should be members of (VP-101, VP-102, VP-22, and VP-21) is known now. I honestly think every one of our men who flew this wonderful aircraft has something to remember that no one else will ever have. To this day I am so proud to have been a crew member of this wonderful plane. One of these days, I will have my notes in the back of my log book be known. Served as the Night Check maintenance control CPO during Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Masirah, Oman Detachment, along with 5 other maintenance folks, whose work was superb, and taught me more about teamwork and loyalty than any I can remember. This was followed by a detachment to NAF Naha, Okinawa, Japan where we had a very difficult time due to engines being bogged down due to exposure to oil fire smoke from the burning oil fields in the gulf.
