"...BYRD, Al...It is with sadness that I report the death of Al Byrd. Al served as a pilot in VP-10 from 1982 to 1985. Eventually Al ended up as pilot for American Airlines, flying the Boeing 767 out of Miami, Florida. Al was killed in a plane accident on December 12, 2000 while teaching acrobatics in a Pitts Special. I went through bootcamp at NAS North Island, San Diego, California, AT training in NAS Memphis, Tennessee and NAS Glynco, Georgia, and homeported at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii. BYERLY, P. Wayne pizwilli@bledsoe.net "...I Served in Crew-5 of VP/VPB-27 from day of commissioning,June 1, 1944 until relieved at Okinawa (August 8, 1945) and rotated back to the States. Being a third-class mech (AMM3/c), qualified flight-engineer but served primarily as a tail-gunner. Those inclusive dates encompass the Okinawa Campaign. I lost track of nearly everyone. In 1983, a now deceased pilot gave me a roster of 19 Officers and 2 Enlisted men. Determined, and at my own expense, I started with that list of shipmates. At the end of seven years I had 164 current addresses on roster of VPB-27 personnel. It was a real joy! Some since are deceased and some are just not interested. At present I have an active mailing of 120 Officers and Enlisted. I publish an informal (labor of love) Newsletter of VPB-27 for the guys..." [12JAN98]
BYNUM, Terris L. tlbynum@rtmc.net "...I reported to NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii in April or May of 1956 to MATRON2 and was part of the crew assigned to to restore personnel lockers in preparation for the AEW squadrons that had'nt been established yet. I served as the Yeoman in the 1st LT's Office until VW-14 was established at which time I was invited to become an ACW. I was a crew member aboard Connie "143222" that lost its height finding radar and center vertical stabilizer enroute to Midway just west of the Islands. "God Bless Cdr Bogdonavich" where ever he is for pulling us out of that horrendous dive. I continued to fly until 1959 when the Navy offered me "Air Traffic Control School" so off to ATC School at NAS Olathe, Kansas and finishing my navy stint at NAS Oceana in 1961. Started my Air Traffic career with the FAA in Wash. DC/Va. 1965, retiring in 2002 to a beautiful lake in North Carolina. I now spend my time at my computer flying the "flight simulator." Gravit most of the time and a red headed LCDR we called Doc because he was a dentist. I came to NAS Olathe, Kansas in 1964 and was assigned to VP-883 and immediately went on flight status. I was an AMH2 and flew the Ordnance position for 4 years. Had a rate change request in for AO when I got out 30 Apr 68 and went to the Army because all 3 of my requests for Viet Nam had been turned down by the Navy. I volunteered for Special Forces and finaly made it to RVN in 69. When I went thru NAF Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam I found that the Army was flying P2V-7s - w/o the stinger tail and painted black.
