AIELLO, ATC Bob Retired bafalo@aol.com "...From 1963 to 1965 I served at the Midway Island Detachemnt of AEWBarRonPac. I was there for the disestablishment of the Barrier Squadrons. In 1972 after waiting for a year at NAS Brunswick, Maine. I was assigned to FAW-5 Special Projects (original VPU-1). At that time Special Projects was made up of 3 Officers and 6 Enlisted. They were all stationed in NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. In 1972 I joined them formally in FAW-5. Our aircraft were attached to VP-8 (3 of them). Duriong my tour of duty I was chosen to go to NAS Alameda, California to accept and design to new aircraft (1975). Our earlier a/c had been declared non-safe for military operations due to excessive corrosion. I and a Civil Service Engineer spent almost a year of rotationg in and out of NAS Alameda, California. We had a free hand in the designing of the internal electronics necessary for the operations of Special Projects. I was awarded a Naval Acheviement Medal for this accomplishemnt. A plague was installed on the bathroom door of our original aircraft P-3B BUNO 153450 with both our names on it. It was during 1975/76 that I came up with the name Old Buzzards which was adopted as the Special Projects name (spinoff of Old Crows). I hope someone reading this would try to contact me and invite me to the present squadron VPU-1. Both I and D. Moyers would be interested in touring the present aircraft used..." [18MAY2005]
