The letter was written in March 1949 while my dad was in NAS Jacksonville, Florida in the US Navy. I have no idea in what newspaper this picture was printed or exactly when the picture was taken but I do know that my dad was discharged July 7, 1950 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida. If anyone remembers my dad or if there is any FASron Six historical information concerning my dad, I would appreciate receiving any information. My dad passed away in 1957 when I was 3 years old..." Circa 1940

HistoryA BIT OF HISTORY: "...FASRON 6, NAS Jacksonville, Florida- was a very large Aircraft Service Squadron supporting all the Air Groups under COMFAIRJAX (Commander Fleet Aircraft Jacksonville) Florida from the 1940s through the 1950s. I served in this unit, in the Ordnance Department, almost one year (1951-1952). Many of the incidents that I was in are reported in my series "Wings & Things" at http://www.vpnavy.com/wings.html and you can check that out there. The FASRON supported several outlying activities, including the Naval Bombing Target installation at Switzerland, Florida, where I also served. The squadron patch was a swarm of Navy fighter planes taking off from a Carrier and forming the numeral "6". The motto on the patch was "Service To The Fleet". My best friend was an Airman, Don Angst from Ohio (?), who later went to Lakehurst Parachute Riggers School in NJ. While there, he visited (1953 ?) Trudy and I at our honeymoon cottage in North Jersey, and we wound up on a Sunday night having to drive him all the way back to Lakehurst and return home ourselves. No easy task in those days before the Garden State Parkway and NJ Turnpike. If Don or any of his relatives read this, send me an e-mail and get in touch. We have 46 years to catch up on. (Don and I joined the Knights of Columbus together)...." Contributed by Robert E. Woerner robertewoerner@cs.com WebSite: Wings the Thing! [15MAR99]
