VP AircraftAIRCRAFT: WV-2 AircraftCameraFASRON-102 WV-2 BUNO: Unknown "...This U.S. Navy WV-2 Super Constellation flew the first Project Magnet 25,000 mile flight to survey the earth's magnetism. Constellations, designed specifically for Project Magnet, have a Vector Airborne Magnetometer (VAM) developed by the Naval Ordnance Laboratory to measure the direction and intensity of the earth's magnetic field and an Airborne Neutron Monitor, installed by Bartol Research Foundation of Philadelphia, to provide continuous recordings of cosmic ray intensity. Named "El Paisano," the aircraft is commanded by Lieutenant Commander Julian H. Brady, USNR, of McComb, Mississippi, and is assigned to Fleet Aircraft Service Squadron 102, NAS Norfolk, Virginia. VP AircraftAIRCRAFT: WV-2 AircraftCameraFASRON-102 WV-2 BUNO: Unknown "...This Navy WV-2 Super Constellation transport is starting its round-the-world Project Magnet flight under the command of Lieutenant Commander Julian H. Brady, USNR, of McComb, Mississippi. The plane has its name, "El Paisano," (the Road Runner) and a picture of a road runner painted on its fuselage. When it was in Australia on a recent flight, someone painted a small Australian kangaroo beside the bird. The aircraft crew has decided that the kangaroo will remain. They have also decorated the aircraft with flags of some of the sixteen countries visited thus far by the WV-2. Official U.S. Navy Photograph released by the Department of Defense, Washington, D.C.
